The data files are in netcdf (.nc) format and are provided for the period from January 1980 till December 2015; there are a total of 432 monthly mean data files (36years * 12months = 432 total monthly mean data files). This temperature dataset is obtained from NASA’s MERRA system (Modern-era Retrospective analysis for Research And Applications) which assimilates satellite and model data. For more info, see http://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/merra/ . A Matlab script is also provided named ‘read_temperature_data.m’ which reads the netcdf data files and extracts the temperature variable from each file. The Matlab script creates a 3D matrix (temp_data) for storing the global spatial distribution of temperature for each month. The first two dimensions of ‘temp_data’ correspond to temperature values for the given latitudes and longitudes. Refer to the comments in the Matlab script.
