Manual Installation

To build the theme the follwing packages are required

  • autoconf
  • automake
  • pkg-config or pkgconfig for Fedora
  • libgtk-3-dev for Debian based distros or gtk3-devel for RPM based distros
  • git to clone the source directory

Note: For distributions which don't ship separate development packages, just the GTK 3 package is needed instead of the -dev packages.

For the theme to function properly, install the following

  • GNOME Shell 3.14 - 3.24, GTK 3.14 - 3.22
  • The gnome-themes-standard package
  • The murrine engine. This has different names depending on the distro.
    • gtk-engine-murrine (Arch Linux)
    • gtk2-engines-murrine (Debian, Ubuntu, elementary OS)
    • gtk-murrine-engine (Fedora)
    • gtk2-engine-murrine (openSUSE)
    • gtk-engines-murrine (Gentoo)

Install the theme with the following commands

1. Get the source

Clone the git repository with

git clone https://github.com/horst3180/arc-theme --depth 1 && cd arc-theme

2. Build and install the theme

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
sudo make install

Other options to pass to autogen.sh are

--disable-transparency disable transparency in the GTK3 theme
--disable-light disable Arc Light support
--disable-darker disable Arc Darker support
--disable-dark disable Arc Dark support
--disable-cinnamon disable Cinnamon support
--disable-gnome-shell disable GNOME Shell support
--disable-gtk2 disable GTK2 support
--disable-gtk3 disable GTK3 support
--disable-metacity disable Metacity support
--disable-unity disable Unity support
--disable-xfwm disable XFWM support

--with-gnome=<version> build the theme for a specific GNOME version (3.14, 3.16, 3.18, 3.20, 3.22)
Note 1: Normally the correct version is detected automatically and this
                           option should not be needed.
                           Note 2: For GNOME 3.24, use --with-gnome-version=3.22
(this works for now, the build system will be improved in the future)

After the installation is complete the theme can be activated with gnome-tweak-tool or a similar program by selecting Arc, Arc-Darker or Arc-Dark as Window/GTK+ theme and Arc or Arc-Dark as GNOME Shell/Cinnamon theme.

If the --disable-transparency option was used, the theme will be installed as Arc-solid, Arc-Darker-solid and Arc-Dark-solid.

Uninstall

Run

sudo make uninstall

Troubleshooting

If you use Ubuntu with a newer GTK/GNOME version than the one included by default (i.e Ubuntu 14.04 with GTK 3.14 or Ubuntu 15.04 with GTK 3.16, etc.) the prebuilt packages won't work properly and the theme has to be installed manually as described above. This is also true for other distros with a different GTK/GNOME version than the one included by default

--

If you get artifacts like black or invisible backgrounds under Unity, disable overlay scrollbars with

gsettings set com.canonical.desktop.interface scrollbar-mode normal

arc-theme's Issues

Windows Titles

captura de pantalla de 2015-06-01 03-59-45

When using gtk 2 apps, the window's title from unfocused windows look awful.

Weird shadow in gnome shell menu

screenshot from 2015-05-27 16-05-21

In the Wi-Fi dropdown menu, there is some kind of discoloration right in the middle, looks like a messed up shadow of some kind. (Plus I made a few mods to the theme in the screenshot, but ignore those.)

[question] gtk3 window shadows

Hi there,

i just wondering if is possible to add more shadow to gtk3 windows ?
captura de pantalla de 2015-05-23 10-38-37

something like in gtk2 apps?
captura de pantalla de 2015-05-23 10-39-08

btw this theme is amazing, i love it....
thanks mate

Close button missing

On Fedora 22 on some applications close button is missing. Some applications like tweak-tool, file manager have the close button. Terminal, Firefox and others doesn't have it.
file manager with close button
firefox without close button

Any hinting ("slight", "medium", "full") with ("rgba" or "grayscale") looks odd

Without hinting:
Without
With hinting:
With

Hopefully you can see the font difference in the top bar (specifically the date). I noticed that with hinting looks like the default shell theme without hinting and without hinting looks like the default shell theme with hinting. I'm not 100% if this is a problem with the theme or with gnome shell (this is gnome shell 3.16.2 by the way on Arch)

Optional transparency in autogen.sh

Could you add a --disable-transparency, like in the other options?
I like the theme, but I'm not a big fan of the see-through window borders/sidebar/etc.

Double Close Buttons

When I have my buttons set up as close on the left and minimize on the right, GTK3 apps show that both are close buttons screenshot from 2015-06-05 16 09 10

Too Bright

It's white color, I love white color, but this one is different, It hurts my eyes.

No Donation Button

A donation button somewhere to keep you a motivated and some people are surely willing do give you a small tip (please not in the gtk theme)

Colour difference on unfocused windows

screenshot from 2015-05-17 19 34 27

I'm using the branch for 3.14, with Debian on 3.14. When a window regains focus, the internal part changes it's colour to that of the window border again.

On a side note: I'm not sure it it's just me, but the distance between the window options seem just a bit too far apart from each other. Is that indented?

Sidebar in Nemo is not transparent

Nemo is a popular, advanced file manager developed by the Linux Mint team. Arc theme looks great with it, however the sidebar is not transparent. See screenshot.

Unity black bg bug

Even after disabling overlay scrollbars the background in Gedit is black:
http://i.imgur.com/AGddJ7d.png
I can't see the problem elsewhere (this is usually related to tabs/tab backgrounds) but considering that overlay scrollbars are a major feature of the DE, and Gedit a core Gnome app, I thought it worth reporting.

Missing shadow for desktop-icons-text

the color of the desktop-icons-text is white, without shadow the text is not readable on a bright background image.

Solution (add text-shadow):

.nautilus-desktop.nautilus-canvas-item, .nemo-desktop.nemo-canvas-item {
  color: #ffffff;
text-shadow: 1 1 alpha (@fg_color, 0.8); }

[Feature Request] Cinnamon support

Self-explanatory title.

Would be great, as Cinnamon has very few good themes.

Probably wouldn't be too hard either since the DEs are very similar technologically, but I wouldn't know.

Window titles are shown without descenders

Window titles are cut off at the bottom and show up without descenders - the lower parts of the letters g,j,p,q and y in most fonts. Is there a way to adjust this? See screenshot. My window title font is set to Futura-Book Book, 10px.

Thanks for an otherwise beautiful theme.

Extension Font/icon colors and desktop font shadow

Hi,
I ve started to use ur theme and indeed it is awesome. I see only 2 problem and both about fonts.

First, Desktop shotcuts' fonts dont have shadow and shortcuts name blend over open color backgrounds

For the second, I attached a screenshot. The extension's fonts and symbols are so similiar to background.

Best regards.

Strange bubbles in Libreoffice

I noticed some strange looking shapes for drop down boxes ( in the sidebar and header) in Libreoffice , I've also noticed this potential deformation with Shutter with the delay timer. I was wondering if this is a design choice or a bug?

My OS is ubuntu 15.04 with GNOME 3.14 and i pulled the Arc theme from Git today (1/6/15)

No transparency on Unity

I'm not seeing transparency in Unity. Is this a bug/feature or just me?

Beautiful theme - thank you.

Easy installation / Oduso

Hello,
I wasn't sure how to contact you. I really love you new theme and would like to feature it on oduso. We already include your vertex theme. I just saw that you provide a repository on opensuse. Currently the script downloads the zip from deviantart and moves it into the system theme directory. I will do some testing in freya and adjust the website.

Could you please inform me when your new Arc theme is also available from the repo? I can then add it to oduso. By clicking on the image you can see a brief description and a link to the theme page.
Cheers,
lorenzbi

Navigation bar in Pantheon Files too dark / text illegible

As can be seen in the attached screenshot, the text in the Pantheon Files navigation bar is not very legible. I also guess the bar is not as transparent as in the screenshots? I think it looks better when it would be more transparent.
Love this theme BTW! Looks very polised overall :)

Searchboxes in (some?) Qt applications look messed up

I encountered a very noticeable bug concerning the Youtube player Minitube.
The application's search boxes contain gray rectangles (one being darker than the other). Moreover there is a white rectangular background around the top search box.

minitube-arc-theme-searchbox-bug

Additional Information

Minitube is written in Qt and the theme is applied by selecting "Gtk+" in the GUI Style section of qtconfig-qt4. If I am not mistaken, Qt apps deduce the GTK style from the GTK2 section of a theme.

I am using the Gala window manager on Arch Linux if that makes any difference. My setup consists almost exclusively of Gnome, Pantheon, Budgie or other GTK applications. The only exceptions being Minitube and Okular, for which I simply cannot find worthy GTK equivalents 😆

That leads me to another interesting point: This problem does not occur in Okular's seach dialog, as can bee seen in the attached screenshot:

okular-arc-searchbox-nobug

I know that Qt compatibility is probably not among the highest priorities so far. That being said I have been using your Vertex and Ceti themes because not only they look great (which they do indeed!) but also because they are the most complete and bug free themes across all applications and window toolkits 👍

I would love to see the Arc theme keeping up those quality standards of yours, once progress on more essential things has been made 😉

Gedit is transparent without tabs

When there are no tabs open on Gedit, it is completely transparent. To reproduce:

  • Open Gedit
  • Press Control+W to close the tab

While this is pretty cool, I'm not sure its very user friendly... 😄
