kickstart's Introduction

Kickstart

Kickstart is a modern front-end CSS library for clean HTML and fast performance.

Code Climate

Quickstart with Gulp

Clone the repository and run make setup in the directory created. This is only required when starting the project.

Run gulp to again build and watch the project. A browser tab should open in your default browser automatically when ready. You'll also get an external URL you can use on other devices.

Alternatively, run gulp build to build the project without watching or creating a server.

Going further

If when running the gulp command, node warns you a module is missing, a dependency probably wasn't installed. It may be enough to run npm install again to catch the missing dependency. In some cases, this problem can be solved by deleting the node_modules directory and running npm install again.

Javascript assets

JavaScript assets can be written as modules in lib/coffee. Add each module to app.coffee in this same directory to output a single, minified JavaScript file with Kickstart.js included.

CSS assets

A style.sass should currently exist in lib/sass. Use this to write your styles, importing any other sass files you create along the way. To change themes, simply change the theme import at the top of the file.

Building getkickstart.com and Kickstart core

Gulp

Directions are similar to the above, however, you should run gulp watch:docs exclusively for docs creation. This will output to /docs instead of /public.

Alternatively, run gulp build:docs to build without watching.

Rails gem and Node.js package

To build gem/package, run make build-all. This will automatically fire up gulp to compile files, bump version numbers, and deploy to NPM/RubyGems.org respectively.

Deployment

  • Deployed with CodeShip
  • master deploys to getkickstart.com
  • stage deploys to stage.getkickstart.com

kickstart's Issues

Invite: Theme Slate: Debu, debuton, demonstration

Theme Slate would like to invite everyone to it's self exhibition on Kickstrap nickl-'s fork proudly parading around in the latest bootstrap docs.

It became evident that this theme has suffered some neglect and now with the added TLC can proudly go out and face the world. While I was fixing the bugs I also took the time to extend the exposed variables a complete list was worked into the documentation, please have a look and send me your feedback and comments.

The theme is a dream to work with now while I started collecting our documentation into a working subset again, see #5 but the true test will be to see how customizable it will be when making new themes and I am excited to see what the community can come up with. Do we have any pixel gurus around, you are invited to come do your magic. I will gladly help should you get stuck or have any questions but I have a feeling it's going to be a breeze =) Have a look and .give me your opinion.

JS-Error in Firefox and link error in Chrome

Great, these things about apps seem be be understood now :)

But I still get this error in the latest Firefox 16.0.1:

TypeError: document.styleSheets[i].rules is undefined
for (j = 0; j < document.styleSheets[i].rules.length; j++) {

But now, I get this one in Chrome 22.0.1229.94:

Notes on RC 1.0

Update: http://adamkochanowicz.com/2012/twitter-bootstrap-like-youve-never-seen-it-before/

Just finished a Kickstrap project I'll be sharing soon. I now have time to commit myself on getting Kickstrap to v. 1.0.

There are going to be some philosophical changes (let's say) to how Kickstrap will work and what it is intended to be used for. I'll provide some more background later, but here's the gist:

Kickstrap 1.0 will be

  • Smaller (all those js files will be opt-in.)
  • Friendlier (to beginners while still powerful and fast for advanced users.)
  • Prettier (I hate the default theme too.)

Thanks for your help and appreciation.

Epic Editor should be EpicEditor

From: http://getkickstrap.com/apps/epic-editor-214360/

Should be EpicEditor. Also, the description could just use ours:

EpicEditor is an embeddable JavaScript Markdown editor with split fullscreen editing, live previewing, automatic draft saving, offline support, and more. For developers, it offers a robust API, can be easily themed, and allows you to swap out the bundled Markdown parser with anything you throw at it.

I just wanted to add this as a this as a possible bug. I downloaded the newest version and simply ran the build to see what i got and it would not do so. I'm farily sure it's nothing I've forgot to do. Just letting you know. Thanks.

Request your favorite plugins here.

A lot of you have suggested some super cool code projects that can work as "extras" for Kickstrap 1.0.
I've finally developed a way to deliver Kickstrap OEM prepackaged with just a few of these, but allow users to easily pick and choose the add-ons they want in addition.

Please use the comments below to nominate add-ons

I'll package the best ones and do some magic with the other good ones to make them easily plug-innable to Kickstrap 1.0.

Here are my nominations:
MediaElement.js (http://mediaelementjs.com/)
Select2/Chosen (http://harvesthq.github.com/chosen/) and/or (http://ivaynberg.github.com/select2/)
jGrowl (http://stanlemon.net/pages/jgrowl)
Modernizr (http://modernizr.com/)
Animate.css (http://daneden.me/animate/)
Timeline.js (http://timeline.verite.co/)
Hammer.js (http://eightmedia.github.com/hammer.js/)
Stroll.js (http://lab.hakim.se/scroll-effects/)
Mousetrap (http://craig.is/killing/mice)
A Simple Tour (http://alvaroveliz.github.com/aSimpleTour/)

Minified bootstrap.css

css/bootstrap.css is a full compiled version.

Can we please have a compressed version as well in the final varsion?

animate.css documentation

Just a reminder to myself to add documentation for animate.css.

It's already supported and implemented in the RC, btw.

In firefox 16.0.1 I am getting the text "on" just after the themesFunctions Script when viewed in the Source. Can you tell me why this is displaying here? It does not appear in any other browser. Am I missing something simple? Thank you.

Not working in chrome

The less file is not loading when I open my page in Chrome. Any idea why? It works fine in Firefox.

Custom changes location

It would be nice to have a wiki page about custom changes location. I would create such wiki page, but not sure what was your intention about it.

I.e., if I want to use 'amelia' theme and also add some more CSS and JS, where would those custom files go? I do not want to modify the theme as it will be updated and I may loose all changes.

Line 3692 in css/bootstrap.css explains that changes have to be done to overrides.less, which may be rewritten on next update.

I propose to store all custom CSS (non-LESS) and JS files in separate dir that will be empty in Kickstrap distribution package and, therefore, all files will be preserved.

OR, there can be some naming convention (filename namespacing) to store those custom files in the same dirs ('css' and 'js') as compiled LESS and js files.

Merging with h5bp

Questions, processes, discussions, policies activities etc. related to keeping track of changes with boilerplate.

I went ahead to see what will be entailed in merging with our sister project after I read issue 23 by tomBryer,

Because there are no documentation, I could find and before I just dive ahead with assumptions lets just sit down a discuss a few topics first.

There has been quite a few refactoring changes that need to be reworked here as well as the death of HOT pink, may she rest in peace. Let us bow our heads in silence for one minute.

IE9 javascript error - Kickstrap.min.js

Getting the following error in IE9:

SCRIPT5007: Unable to get value of the property 'apps': object is null or undefined

Any ideas on this? works fine in IE8/ IE7 , Chrome and firefox

Cheers,
Bran

Apps 2.0

I'd like to begin a discussion on what apps for the second major release of Kickstrap will look like. It's a long way off but their current design is worthy of an overhaul.

Mainly, should we deprecate config.ks in favor of something more structured and scalable like config.json?

I'd really like to see developers build apps that have more complicated dependency schemes. How does everyone feel about apps so far?

Chosen() does not automatically resize when its parent's size changes with JavaScript

Hey there :-)

I really like your Chosen() inputs, but we have a small problem. We have a navigation bar on the left of our website which can be toggled to be displayed or not using JavaScript. When it is hidden, the main content has a width of span12 (fluid), and if it is shown, it hasa width of span11. Within the content we have many form elements that have their own spanX widths, and they all change their width relatively to the parent's width (span12 or span11), but the Chosen() input doesn't. I think this is because it is rendered only when the document is loaded. So is there a way to make it change its width? E.g. by re-triggering the function which renders the element?

Thank you. Josh

More plugins

I think Kickstrap could really use the plugin mechanism from Boostrap to propose more plugins from the start. Two very interesting one would be the calendar and colorpicker from the Bootstrap issues, that way Kickstrap would both complete and take Bootstrap beyond. Again this is just an example but there are a lot of really good plugins that would be nice to have from the start, like pollyfills and stuff.

Help Finding old Documentation

We integrated with the previous version of Kickstrap and we LOVE IT.

But the old website used to have some very awesome samples and a gallery of the different components in kickstrap.

Now the website is changed for the new version- but is that old version of the site around anywhere?

I have tried looking through the git repo and couldnt find it..

I also tried using archive.org- which keeps copies of old sites, but it turns out github.com has a robots file that disallows crawling..

so I am sol..

I looked all around and could not find a email address or a support forum so I am sorry for filing a bug- but I have no other way of contacting you-

github doesnt seem to have a email system either- you cant just email the author

anyways-

feel free to send me mail at

IcoMoon and FontAwesome to Cause CSS Conflicts

The CSS files for both IcoMoon and FontAwesome both use the following CSS:

[class^="icon-"]::before, [class*=" icon-"]::before {
    /*css here*/
}

We should consider modifying the selector for one of the packages so that both can work together.

add-ons and the extras folder

If you agree I would like to discuss our strategy around add-ons and specifically concerns I have with the extras folder as we are implementing it today.

  • Are we happy with the current layout of the extras folder?
  • What exactly do we put in there?
  • Is it's purpose intuitive enough to users?
  • Should we add more structure to this folder perhaps?

What is the purpose of the extras/css folder and how does this relate to css on root?
I am asking about the relation specifically as it currently contains the other bootstrap stylesheets as well and this makes no sense. Why do we not have an extras/js folder then?

Because we are keeping copies of other projects from outside of the work done here it will be beneficial to define a few things like:

  • What, if any, are the limits to the type of add-ons we include?
  • What is the criteria by which we decide if something should be included?
  • Where will they be placed when included?
  • How and when will they get updated?
  • What about their specific licensing and could there be conflicts?

It might be worth our time to define this before we release v1.0 and have a world of trouble trying to maintain a compatible upgrade path for consecutive releases. We might benefit from a bit more structure in the extras folder which will also alleviate confusion, allow easier maintenance and less problems with lost or missing children like the ones I found above. This will only become more tricky as the source base gets bigger.

It will all depend on what exactly we will consider for inclusion and how this will differ from build/tools as there might be considerable overlap, before we can define a structure I would imagine. One suggestion I have so far would be to add a fonts folder and move icomoon and fontawesome in there which can contain any subsequent fonts and is similar to what we're doing with the themes folder.

If we can group the different types we might consider removing the settings folder, as it would not make sense anymore and keep config files in the root of every folder ie extras/overrides.less, extras/themes/import.less maybe we should call the files settings or config to make it more intuitive.

What are your thoughts?

Addition of hover dropdown menu

Click to open dropdown menus are great for items that you don't need to frequently access, but for sites that have more pages than will comfortably fit in the navbar a dropdown menu that activates on hover would be useful.

Personally I would prefer that it not use the various transition effects that run rampant on the themes that Themeforest sells, but I can imagine everyone might not agree.

+ default audio/video player

Would it be out of scope to add an audio & video player to h5bp?
Native browser players have different GUIs, cloud hosting makes media streaming affordable, etc... I found MediaelEment.js interesting. Pros & cons:

  • Great to share in common skinning
  • Less to worry about formats vs browser compatibilities, since not all browsers use all formats. mediaelement.js takes that worry away
  • ME is active on github
  • another package to worry about

What you think?

Trouble getting dropdown menus to work

Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong I have recently downloaded a fresh copy from Kickstrap website but can't seem to get dropdown menus or responsive drop down to work.

I am compiling Kickstrap.less with WinLess.
I have replaced kickstrap.less with a link to the compiled kickstrap.CSS in the head of index.html like so:

I have also modified the kickstrap.less to include responsive.less by removing comment and I am running project on local machine using IIS express. Have I left something out?

bootstrap ie6

I noticed an entry in sample_index.html while merging with h5dp A nickl-/Kickstrap@a18ab0516d40566be45396f2b1b69f651ba664fe

  <!--[if lt IE 7]>
    <link href="css/bootstrap.ie6.css" rel="stylesheet">
  <![endif]-->

I found the file in question, which does not reside under css but extras/css and this was fixed in the update referred to above.

I am assuming that this file/entry refers to the work done @ Bootstrap-IE6 if this is correct then we are missing the js part of the solution and is therefor incomplete. Would you agree?

Are we still including this and if yes I suggest we create a proper folder for the distro under extras, comment the entry in sample_index.html and implement the js part as well. Anyone disagree?

Error loading website: document.styleSheets[i].rules is undefined

Hi there!

I get this error in Chrome console on loading the website with Kickstrap (1.1.0 Beta) included:

TypeError: document.styleSheets[i].rules is undefined
in kickstrap (line 188)

it's inside function setupKickstrap()

Any idea where the problem could be?

It looks like we need the less file to be initially included?

Progress bar stripes and animations can be obscured by styles

A progress bar uses Bootstrap recommended code, but doesn't appear striped or animated:
<div class="progress progress-striped active">

To make it work add progress-info (or -danger, or -success) to the classes:
<div class="progress progress-danger progress-striped active"&gt

The coding style suggested by the docs doesn't work because the base style obscures the stripes and animation.

In the rule with selectors: .progress .bar, .progress .step-full, Kickstrap, or possibly a theme, appears to obscure the animation with two linear gradient background-image properties:

background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, 0 0, 0 100%, from(#4183C4), to(#3269A0));
background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, #4183C4, #3269A0);
