transifex-old-core's Introduction

Transifex

This repository is no longer maintained. Here be dragons.

Transifex is a cloud-based localization platform that manages localization of digital products and supporting web content. It focuses on integrating well with the existing workflow of fast-pased product teams and translators.

About this repository

Transifex used to be maintained as an open-source project on the side of Transifex.com. Since mid 2012, this repository is no longer actively maintained in favor of working aggressively in extending Transifex.com itself.

Nowadays there is almost no resemblance between the two products.

For any help, please visit Transifex.com and our documentation pages or contact us through there.

transifex-old-core's Issues

Support language fallbacks

I should be able to declare language fallbacks (maybe in .tx/config). E.g.

en-GB: en-US, en
es-AR: es
es-CO: es-AR, es
es-ES: es, es

Then when I do a tx pull I can all the translations from es-CO backfilled with es-AR and failing that backfilled with es.

Deleting a language without language team not possible

Hi I am having the issue that there is a language (nl_NL) in our hub project, which does not have a language team anymore, but I am not able ot delete it easily.

Steps to reproduce:
I got a request of a user to be the coordinator of nl_NL, I approved, because I knew I can switch it easily to nl afterwards.

After approval, I modified nl_NL language team and changed it to nl.
Result: We've got now nl with a language team and nl_NL without a language team.

When modifying the nl_NL language team and trying to delete it you only see now a comment: "The current language has no teams. You can delete the whole language by deleting all the translations of all resources."

We currently have 22 ressources and this will be more in future. It is a nightmare to manually remove all of those just to get rid of a language without a team.

Associating "Social Accounts" with Transifex

--Description of the problem--

Transifex offers (registered) users the otpion to associate social media accounts with their Transifex account. This function doesn't work as expected.

Expected: After associating, you could use Twitter, Google+, ... to log in as "User X"

What happens: Instead of "associaating the acccount, a new empty user account is created, for each account you'd try to associate with the Transifex account.
These accounts aren't linked to your Transifex account and aren't member of any projects / teams.

//Steps to recreate problem//

  1. Log in to Transifex.
  2. Go to your user account.
  3. Click "Settings".
  4. Go to Social Login.
  5. Choose a provider to associate with.
  6. You are now taken to the page for the provider to "associate" the account - which is expected. When approving, however, you see that you're
now logged in as another, new user. When checking your social Login, you'll see the Social Media account is associated with this brand new account,
and not the account you were hoping to associate it with.

Users that try to use this option will end up with multiple accounts.

In my case, using this feature created the users 'torettox84' and 'stevenzeegers' which I have no use for.

//Additional problem//

Online/offline icons would be useful

It would be neat if Transifex could compound the user picture with an on/offline marker, and wheter the user has anything locked, and even whether it's locked for local translation or via the web tool. All in all, it would likely foster the community aspect of Transifex, and allow translators, coordinators and project owners to see who's available at a given moment, and whether somebody has something locked.

My suggestion would be a small green circle – pale green if online but no activity for the last 45 minutes, dark green if online and active – in the lower right corner of an avatar. If that user has something locked, then to the right right of that circle (should it also be displayed), a small padlock icon would be displayed, darker orange if in edit mode on Transifex, and darker grey if locked for offline use.

No personal statistics

I can't seem to find my personal translation statistics.

When I click explore and select Hebrew I can see the number of words translated by other Hebrew translators but I can't see mine, where can I find it?
Or alternatively, if this option is not implemented yet I'd love to see it implemented (In Launchpad/Rosetta it is called "Karma").

Kind regards,
Yaron Shahrabani.

Statistics widgets for hub projects

I am pretty sure it is a known "issue" or feature request which you are already aware of, nevertheless I did not find a ticket regarding this topic.

When opening the widgets page of a hub project, I don't get the statistic widgets, because there is no resources in this project.
http://www.abload.de/img/screenshot7sd7g.png

It would be nice get the widgets for consolidated statistics of all outsourced projects of that hub.

.wiki format does not enforce preservation of block order

I have been toying with a page written in MediaWiki syntax, and it appears that Transifex only partially enforce the ordering of blocks within the page, that is, after performing a re-upload with a slightly distinct variant, I did end up with the title (which had been touched) being listed in the middle of the block listing. This was a rather confusing situation because unlike resource files, pages should preserve ordering otherwise it's rather unreadable.

Language status for a project without ressources and language team results in "page not found"

We have a project which does not have any resources, yet. After setting up the hubs and outsourced projects, I have to re-create the language teams as you can see here http://www.abload.de/img/screenshoth9ux6.png .

When going to the language team overview for Norwegian now you get the status for "all Projects": http://h12.abload.de/img/screenshoty8uoj.png

Switching now to a project without ressources, here "MediaPortal 2 Installer", you end up on the "page not found": http://www.abload.de/img/screenshotlfuu4.png

After creating the language team (adding maintainers) everything is fine for the project without ressources as well: http://www.abload.de/img/screenshotg7uxn.png

Transifex should take one sentence as a segment for translation instead of whole string

I am using Transifex and it would be better if Transifex should take one sentence as a segment/unit for translation instead of whole string. This is a major problem of all the editors based on .po format. All editors show a translator the whole string, sometimes it might be of several sentences. Here difficulty starts. It hampers:

  1. Editor's Usability
  2. Translation Memory and its utilization
  3. Translation Speed

The editor's approach to show translation unit should be changed and show the translator sentence by sentence to translate. Reproducible: Always Expected Results: one sentence should be the unit of translation instead of whole string.

Adding magahi language to transifex

Magahi (mag-IN) is one of the most important language spoken by 34 million people in the easternpart in India. This in one of the scheduled language by government of India. So
I am eager to start the localisation process for the language.

optional cc on sending messages

use case:
A translator requests a new team.
I or another maintainer send him a message "check with the main project to avoid work being wasted" before accepting the request.

Would be very useful if the other maintainers could see the message written.

Display screenshots to translators

I've developed a system for providing a screenshot to translators to illustrate the context in which a message is used in the program, and wanted to help integrate it into Transifex if there was any interest in such a feature. Basically, the way it would work is, the developer can upload some screenshots in addition to the message template file, and they would automatically be matched to messages, so that when the translator is translating a message, a screenshot will be shown. If interested in the details, I've published a paper on it in CHI 2012 ( http://groups.csail.mit.edu/uid/other-pubs/chi2012-screenshots-for-translation-context.pdf )

In terms of code, the prototype implementation I used for the paper, which works with gettext message files, is MIT-licensed, and is written in Java, is at https://github.com/gkovacs/textmatch . I realize Java isn't very popular in the FOSS world, so I can clean it up and rewrite it into C and write documentation if needed. I was primarily interested if there was any interest in integrating such a feature into Transifex, and if yes, how I could help do so.

Support for localized screenshots

Tx.net does not seem to support localization of screenshots (figures) ATM. Because we use screenshots extensively in Fedora docs, and Publican already supports localized screenshots, support in Tx would help us delivering documentation with a more complete localized content.
See e.g. GNOME's Damned Lies for an example of localized screenshot support in UI.

Request for *.wxl format (Windows Installer Toolset - WiX)

I would like to request support for wxl-files. These are localization files for the windows installer projects. These projects are used to build msi packages for software deployment.

Infos about the WiX Toolset can be found here: http://wixtoolset.org/
There is a localization of the basic wix strings: http://wix.tramontana.co.hu/tutorial/localization
And each project which is using wix can created it's own wxl files for project specific texts.

A few example files can be found here:
http://wix.tramontana.co.hu/sites/wix.tramontana.co.hu/files/localization/WixExt_de-de.wxl
http://wix.tramontana.co.hu/sites/wix.tramontana.co.hu/files/localization/WixUI_da-dk.wxl
http://wix.tramontana.co.hu/system/files/samples/WixExt_en-us.wxl
http://wix.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/view/da439294ef48#src%2fext%2fUIExtension%2fwixlib%2fWixUI_de-de.wxl
http://wix.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/view/da439294ef48#src%2fext%2fUIExtension%2fwixlib%2fWixUI_en-us.wxl

I think in general it is similar to the android xml files with some differences.

Basically it's structure is the following:

First line is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

It can contain comments within

All the strings are wrapped by a tag, which contains the culture as an attribute:

<WixLocalization Culture="en-us" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/2006/localization">

Each string starts has an attribute "Id", which is unique and might contain an optional overridable attribute.
The translated text is within the string tag This is the translated text

  <String Id="ComPlusInstallExecute" Overridable="yes">Registering COM+ components
  <String Id="ComPlusUninstallExecute" Overridable="yes">Unregistering COM+ components
  ...
</WixLocalization>

I hope the explanations and links cover all the required information to easily create a new format parser for wxl files.

Cheers,
Tommy

headers of po-files are modified

po files uploaded to transifex will have a modified header after downloading (for use; did not check the other cases).

Maybe the behaviour is clear when checking the code, but of course I can provide example files.

The header will mostly be overwritten by the header of the pot file.
An example line that will be lost:

Updates (C) 2012 Christoph Miebach [email protected]

This is a real issue if you want to use some older files (with a lot of former translators)

Enable editing the header or keeping the header would seem appropriate to me.
(The meta information updates are fine, of course, like "Language-Team:)

notify all members

I would like to have some notify-all-member function.

For example when a release going to happen soon and the translations are going to be send upstream.

Or when a ressource is going to be deleted (maybe updated), so the translators can backup the current state, if they wish.

Allow anonymous access to files.

Pulling translations from transifex.net currently requires a user account on the server. It would be great if anonymous users could pull updates too.

Better notification for team changes

Right now the notification I receive when some of the coordinators makes a change in a team is not very descriptive. Because Mike and I like the keep an eye on the changes made in the teams, it would be very nice if the mailed notification contains a bit more information, something like what trac or bugzilla does maybe.

Display the source code related to a given string

Since Transifex already knows the position of a string in the source file, it would be great, if lotte would show the source code for that (or have a link to the relevant file). This is only possible for specific formats, like PO files, and specific configurations, like projects hosting their source code in github or bitbucket.

Display / Retrieve All Contributing Translators

I may be missing something, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to view all users who are members of teams contributing to a project. I can view members of individual locale teams, but not across my entire project. It would be most useful to be able to see all of them at once, and even better to be able to retrieve them via the API.

Show newlines for announcements

Announcements are shown without the included newlines in the overview. They are shown as intended when clicking on the subject.

My last announcement without newlines is a pain to read.

third button on request

A third button on a request: "Message" next to "Approve" "Deny"

With a cc to all maintainers. Since not all translators manage their work on transifex some languages seem empty altough there already is a translator.

So I often advise translators to contact the current (upstream) maintainer (or announce the taking of the language upstream). Since the other maintainer won't get a copy he will write the same again. And then the translator has to answer to both of us.

Warn translator on tag mismatch (XHTML)

I tried to pull a bunch of translations for https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/torproject/resource/1-short-user-manual-xhtml/, and got stuck with a number of errors of the type "Exception: Remote server replied: Error compiling the translation file: Opening and ending tag mismatch: ...".

It would be great to see Transifex warn the translator if there is a tag mismatch, so that he/she can take care of the problem before saving the file. Allowing the file to be saved with a tag mismatch means that the developer will have to fix the mismatch before including the translation later on.

New project inside a language interface b0rken (autoload, in-pagescroll, sort)

Hi, as outlined by Göran (http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/trans/2012-June/009991.html), the new interface is broken by design just for the sake of ondemand loading.

Is it possible to revert back to the old way of doing thing :

  • load all projects files, without in-page scroll bar (this is what the navigator page is done for), e.g. remove autoload on scroll,
  • allow sorting of all those.

That would be a first step to get something functional where people are able to see right away what has to done, because with the current interface, nothing shows up. So projects are stuck.
Second issue will be a RFE to get hierarchical view (list of projects with statistics, then files inside that project).

More granularity for acess control

Hi,
Currently, for a project, we can choose between 3 options (free for all, limited access, outsourced), but we cannot specify this at translation/resource level.
It would be very nice to be able to specify this at language/resource level, if needed.
For instance, in our project, we have few people (for few languages) who contribute to it and we would like to make them responsible of the team (limited access).
But for all the others languages, as far as we have no particular person more reliable than another, we would like to open translations to everyone (free for all).
If I'm right, this is how access control works on Launchpad for translations (for example).
Hope I was clear. If not, do not hesitate to ask me ;)
Regards,
Arnaud

Keep table sort column for each resource browsed

I found it a rather nasty feature that I have to resort the strings tables very often when jumping between different tables. My impression is that these tables are implemented using datatables.net which allows to store the sorting column(s) inside a cookie so when you come back later to the same table it is still sorted as when you left it. I think this also works across multiple tables. See also:
http://datatables.net/release-datatables/examples/basic_init/state_save.html

no timeout with transifex client (network)

That would be great to be able to set a timeout while pulling translations.
During the tx pull, if the network get down, the client just wait until the network get back to continue its task. But, many times it just don't resume, so it goes stuck.

Could we have a timeout argument, or something alike?

Cheers,

Support es-419

Transifex.net should support es-419 for Latin America. Google Chrome apparently is now using this in it's accept-languages, and it might make life easier for people wanting to only support two variants of Spanish.

Support for RTL in lotte

Support for RTL languages in lotte is needed.

Points to consider:

  • django-bidi-utils
  • HTML5 and unicode-bidi support
  • What is saved in the database?
  • What about mixed LTR and RTL strings?
  • What about format specifiers, like %s?
