For the moment, no. We have some tickets to add a traversibility layer (#2128) and to generally redesign the environmental representations away from costmaps (#1278) but neither have been seriously started to claim that its coming soon.

Your workflow for a research project seems reasonable. I have to think at least one of those main traversibility estimation / height map libraries are available for ROS 2 or wouldn't be terribly difficult to do that migration for your work. Then you can execute the same workflow you mention!

Unfortunately, its not 'batteries included' right now or in the immediate future. But it is on the roadmap and is towards the top of my list.
