acceleration_firmware's Issues

Clarifying package purpose

Description

Can I clarify what the intended use-scenario of this package is?

I understand it's meant to be an abstract package for providing firmware artifacts, but how exactly that happens I am a little unclear about.

I also understand that colcon-acceleration is supposed to help point to the relevant acceleration_firmware_<firmware> package, and ament_acceleration helps to target certain sources for building with a particular kernel, for a particular piece of hardware.

So I'm having some trouble figuring out how this package fits into all of that.

Possible Use Scenarios?

Is this intended to be:

  • [A]: An abstract package, abstract in the sense of abstract base classes, where the package has to be built off of?
    • In that case, is there anything unique about this package that makes it differ from the standard package format?
  • [B]: A metapackage, acting as a directory of other firmware packages (listed as deps in the package.xml)?
  • [C]: A package whose CMakeLists.txt defines environment variables for use with the build system?
  • [D]: Some unified interface?
    • How will the implementation be like? CMake macros (if so, how will that differ from the ament package)? Something else?

Is it any of these, or something else entirely? How does this package fit into the whole hardware acceleration layer?

It'd be great to get some clarification on this. Though if the package is meant to be a template or abstract, it might be difficult getting it released, since there's no implementation..

Cheers,
CH3
