Simple inventory system for unity

I could just be using this wonderful project incorrectly, but say if I click a button, and OnClick I call AddItem(2).
The item does show up in the hierachy under the next available slot, but nothing appears in the on screen canvas. Only when I move the first test item (that is called in the start function of inventory) to the next slot and back does the new item show up.
Should I be doing something more than just referencing the Inventory script, and calling AddItem?
