I'm not fully understanding what you mean, but it sounds fishy. If you want to try it, do it in the unstable branch, and I'll review it once your finished.

The global variables at the top of the file are the original initialization. Theses are not necessary, but I left them as kind of a reference. That makes it easier to track global variables.

That is what I was referring to. Using public attributes to access the various lists, dictionaries, and variables in the script instead of using global.

As you will see, I broke something when constructing all the mesh... somehow, since I was only working with mat_list. But it illustrates my idea.

By the way, I will not have internet access from sometime tomorrow afternoon until Sunday afternoon (Monday at latest), so tomorrow morning will be the last time I can see any comments. Go ahead and work on Cycles or whatever you were planning. I'll review it when I get back. I might have a small window of time to finish this idea, but I may not, it's really hard to tell. 😉

I have made a good head start with the Cycles materials. Basic materials are already working. I still have to create transparent, metallic and rubber materials. This stuff is much more complicated than the Blender renderer materials. And it's completely undocumented. I have to scrape infos piecemeal from the web, with a lot of trial and error.

I'll review it when I get back.

I said that in the loosest term. I meant just read and run it, not an actual code review. Sorry.
