I personally prefer the smaller size. Anyone else (preferably a part author or frequent LDraw user) have comments on this one?

I use LDraw and Blender quite frequently. It is not logical to import the bricks at the sale of 1.0. if we did that, (I tried this, BTW) the models are giant, and one stud is about as big as the grid floor itself. Also, if you had a large model, the viewport camera clipping would take into effect, not allowing you to view the model. We need to keep imported objects consistent with Blender's scale. After all this is Blender, not an LDraw CAD program. It would a lot differently.

I am a parts author. My ldraw username at the ldraw forums is "steffen".
i am this year's current James Jessiman memorial award laureate.

I'm fine with your decision, as I can choose a factor of 1.0 myself.
the only thing that bugs me is that i have to do that again and again
because the setting is not persisted in config.py.

I do not know much about Blender yet.
what is its default universe dimensions?
it seems that it is probably -1...+1 in each dimension x, y, z.
sorry, this is a dumb question, i could google it up, i am too lazy.

Steffen! Well now, that explains a few things.

As rioforce said, 1.0 is very large, and when working in Blender, models that large can be very unwieldy to deal with. As for it not being saved in config.py, I'll answer that one on the appropriate issue. ;)

I'm not sure myself. I am a coder, not a 3D artist, so things that like are not my cup of tea.
