Thunderbird 60.5.1 (64-bit)
Install of the add-on:
Name: Local test
Local directory: /home/user/.thunderbird/hxxxxxxa.default/Mail
OK

In account settings window, click on "Local test" in the left column. Error message appears:

Server Settings
A parent directory of the directory specified in the Local Directory setting is already used by the "Local test" account. Please pick a different directory.

OK
Then click OK on the Account Setting window. Error message appears:

Server Settings
The Local Directory path "/home/user/.thunderbird/hxxxxxxa.default/Mail" is not suitable for message storage. Please choose another directory.

This new folder can NOT receive mails from account by drag/drop nor by Move to nor by message filter. It has erratic behaviour.

By the way, when new local folders are created (for test) then deleted, directories created in "/home/user/.thunderbird/hxxxxxxa.default/Mail" are not deleted. How to remove them?

About pop

Hello,
I just have a question : is it dangerous, when you attach local folders through the extension, if you forgot that there is a pop mail box in them ?
I found it empty, and see no other reason for it ...

Remove Account and Data

Currently when removing an account, directories and contents are not deleted.

In the dialog box:

  1. Rename title to "Remove Account and Data"
  2. Add "Remove account information" option, with keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "a"
  3. Add "Remove message data" option, with keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "d"
  4. Add "More Info" button, with keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "I"
  5. Add "Show data location" button, with keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "S"
  6. Remove the "(Note: ...)" string
  7. Rename button label "OK" to "Remove", with keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "R"

reviewing code/ scripts/ generated xpi, certain vbox settings still target mozilla vs thunderbird.net

the 'empty trash on exit' vbox within the most recent build's xpi file -localfolders-2.0.2-tb.xpi, has two values targeting mozilla.org vs thunderbird.net ... are these mail-specific references still valid?
just checking, as I cannot get at my emails within the local folders, noted in another post here.
reviewing the code, scripts to get an understanding of what is intended and what might be introducing an opportunity for the issue I have seen. definitely not a scripter or XUL 'coder' -just looking for understanding of an excellent tool and how it ties into the TBird.

problem reading a mutt maildir as local folder

I try to read a mutt maildir. It is organized in the 3 subfolders "cur, new, tmp". Neither selecting the /basicpath/ of the folder nor selecting /basicpath/cur as source dir will show any mails (yes, I did check maildir format). Using " mutt -f /basicpath/ " works perfectly.

What am I missing? Thank you

Additional default folders: Sent, Delete, Inbox, Archives, Templates, Drafts, Archives, Junk

When creating a LocalFolders Account, in addition to the Trash and Outbox folders, can the following default folders also be created: Templates, Drafts, Archives?

a) This can help with future integration with the Mail Merge add-on, as it uses Templates and Drafts folders

b) When creating these folders after a LocalFolders Account has been created the icons are standard folder icons, not the special icons

What do you think?

Edit:

When creating a LocalFolders Account, in addition to the Trash and Outbox folders, can the following default folders also be created:
Trash, (done)
Sent,
Delete,
Drafts, (missing from image below)
Outbox, (done)
Inbox,

  • I have installed addon
  • I have added the archive pointing to my usb drive
  • I got some error message and after restart I have result as attached.

BTW I am missing an option to delete the folder.

I am using Suse Tumbleweed with Thunderbird 91.3.2 and your addon downloaded today.

Les dossiers locaux dysfonctionnent / EN : Local folders are failing

Version originale en FR
Bonsoir,
Cordialement,

Version EN with Systran
Good evening,
i have created several "new" local files (one for each of the associations to which I volunteer). The first one seems to work normally. But others don't display the content of the messages, but a truncated message: "Or you can add an exception..." in blue and a "Retry" button not functional. I don't know what to do to display the content of the messages I've transferred to it when it seems they're there. Thank you in advance for any help.

Adding/deleting/re-adding LocalFolders with content

Greetings, I have a slightly different use case for the LocalFolders plugin, but one I think maybe a lot of people might have. It ties somewhat into the other posts below, for instance, for forcing rescanning of content.

I would like to use the LocalFolders plugin in a manner similar to the way I used ".pst" files of Outlook - in fact, I'm migrating all my current and archived email from Outlook now. The LocalFolders I have now were imported from Outlook.

So I would like to be able to use the LocalFolders plugin to "attach", i.e., recognize a previously populated set of TB mbox files and ".sbd" folders. For instance, I have a directory structures dedicated to emails related to my wedding, employers of the past, schools attended, etc. (Similarly, my wife has ".pst" files separated by year that I plan to convert into LocalFolders.) I don't have need to access them most of the time; I just want them there in case I do. I want to be able to add any one of them to the TB interface, and then remove them as needed to reduce the clutter.

Maybe it's supposed to already do this, but I have not found it to be the case. The first time, I created the folder without the content, closed TB, and then moved the content in from another location, and re-opened TB - it found and displayed the content.

But that appears to be the only sequence that works, because after removing the local folder and re-adding it again (or even just creating a new local folder pointing to pre-existing content), it no longer seems to recognize that content. The subfolders don't show up. Similar to the case with the networked locations, I waited to see if TB would eventually recognize them, but it's been hours now and no indication that it ever will.

I also notice that when removing a local folder "account" from the accounts list, the directory of that local folder's name under the "Mail" directory in the TB profile stays there. So when I want to create the local folder again it creates another folder with a "-X" sequence number appended. It would seem to me that the plugin (or is it TB's job?) should delete the folder under the profile under the assumption that if the user is removing the account, the user wants TB to forget it existed - until the next time s/he wants to create it anew again. Can they be deleted manually without repercussions? Or else the plugin can re-use the folder that was there before? Or make that a choice for the user during the attaching process?

Thanks.

New LocalFolder need restart of Thunderbird to be usable

I'm new - thank you for the plugin, very helpful - but there is strange issue with 3.3.0

If I create a new local folder (mbox) and I have to restart Thunderbird to be able to use folders inside because otherwise no e-mails can be copied/moved

Before restart Thunderbird:

New Folder inside "LocalFolder" will turn into

  • Dir: NewFolder (-> unusable in mbox format, did it expect to be a maildir format??)
  • File: NewFolder.msf

After restarting Thunderbird, a new folder will result in

  • File: NewFolder (mbox)
  • File: NewFolder.msf (index)
    and in case of sub-folders
  • Dir: NewFolder.sbd

Can anyone reproduce this beside me?

Add missing keyboard shortcuts (accesskey)

For en-US locale:
Add keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "N" to "Name:"
Add keyboard shortcut (accesskey) "D" to "Directory:"

image

Add keyboard shortcuts (accesskey) to any other dialog boxes, menus which are missing keyboard shortcuts (accesskey).

Add appropriate keyboard shortcuts (accesskey) to other locales.

What do you think?

Thank you

Cannot place any messages in Local Folders TB78.11.0

already seen in #16 and fixed in v2.0 but it's happening again.

I've installed plugin, created a new local folder.
running thunderbird in terminal I see when trying to move an email:

cheers!

Does the LocalFolders Addon Allow Importing Mbox Files?

Sorry Im not too technical and I used to use ImportExportTools NG, but it has not been updated in a while. So I was looking at this add on, does it allow you to actually import Mbox emails and Mbox folders into Thunderbird like ImportExportTools NG did?

Does it still work for latest version of thunderbird despite not being updated since 2021?

Thanks

blanc folders

I have Thunderbird on a windows 10 system and shared the profile folder. on a other windows 10 system in the same network i map the profile folder as a drive and point the localfolder add-on to the localfolder on that network drive.
I can see all the folders in Thunderbird but all are empty and Tb keeps on spinning.
What do i do wrong?

the added 'feature' of added folders is detrimental for some uses

I have used LocalFolders for local network storage of emails to keep them organized and off of the cloud.
The more recent add of inserting folders other than 'trash' may be useful in other cases, but as I use it, 'trash' is the only useful standard folder. All others I set up as I need. I have absolutely no need for an out-box/ unsent sub-folder. Please modify this to that end.
thank you, excellent tool, should be core Tbird functionality.

Suggestion: add a disclaimer to resolve confusing terminology inherited from Thunderbird

Due to the confusing terminology used within Thunderbird (see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1699984 which I just filed as well), I was under the impression I could use your addon to add a local mbox or maildir created by Postfix. It seems that's not the case, since the local folders API in thunderbird is only meant for Thunderbirds own file format and expectations.

Would you maybe consider adding a disclaimer on the addon page and in your README here that explains that your addon sadly cannot import independent mailbox in mbox/maildir format that don't originate from Thunderbird? That would probably prevent other users the confusion and waste of time if they're trying to do the same thing I was trying. Hopefully Thunderbird will also clarify this based on my report.

Is it possible to consider improvements?

1- When the option "one file per message (maildir)" is chosen, and a message is moved to a "local folder", a file is created in a folder \Name\Inbox\Cur.

This file has no extension.
Is it possible that the add-on automatically adds the .eml extension to the file? Because if I do it manually, can I open the mail.
Or can we consider an improvement that would save the mail in another format, for example PDF?

2- When a mail is moved to a "local folder", it is saved in \Inbox\Cur\ with a file number to formatting of the name.
Is it possible to add an option to set the file name instead of the number?

[Feature Request] Force automatic reloading of folder`s content

I use the same local folders for different instances of ThunderBird. Often they work simultaneously. Every time, I delete messages in TB1, they are still shown in TB2. But when I click on the message in TB2, the error of inaccessibility occurs. This situation lasts until I close TB2 and rerun it.

Ordering local folders

I'm having a hard time to keep my local folders ordered. Local folders seem to get ordered randomly each time the startup, no matter used naming of folders (I've tried to prefix numbers or letters but to no avail).

I'm also using the Addon Manually sort folders which doesn't seem to affect the local folders ordering.

Specs:

  • Thunderbird 78.7.1
  • Manually sort folders 2.0.6
  • Arch linux using xfce

LocalFolders upgrade requires unexpected permissions

I currently have version 2.0.2 installed on Thunderbird 68.10, and Thunderbird suggests that I could upgrade the add-on but I need to grant the following permissions:

  • Access your data for all websites
  • Access browser tabs

What does it mean? Why would this add-on require these permissions and why not before?
I found the permissions documentation, and it makes me think the descriptions I pasted above are poorly worded, but it still not clear what it means.
I know nothing about Thunderbird development, sorry if this is a basic question :)

Thanks for your work!

Local folder on mac M1 does not seem to work

I can create a new local folder, I can create subfolder but I can't transfert any message on it.

I try with Onedrive, dropbox and local.

It work without problem with the basic local folder

Message disappearing bug on networked stations.

Hello,
We put your add-on in use in our agency as follows:
1- Creating folders: Pierre, Stephane, Marie ... on our local server.
2- On Thunderbird, creation of "local folders" with the plug-in by giving as option "a file per message (Maildir).
3- Thunderbird is open on several networked stations.
4- I move an email from my incoming mail to a local folder, a file is saved in the folder \Pierre\Inbox\Cur
5- The mail does not always appear on all other local network stations while the mail is present in the folder. The email is not deleted.

I guess this problem is related to the Inbox.msf file that does not refresh on all the networked stations in the same way.
By clicking on "Incoming Mail" from the "Local Folder" - Right Click, then choose "Repair Folder", this solves the problem.
Perhaps, could you schedule a refresh of the Inbox.msf file automatically and periodically?

How to set Local Directory

I am trying to create a new local folder using the LocalFolders add on in Thunderbird. How do you enter or choose a local directory to set up the folder?

Thanks!

Sync local foders

I want to sync Thunderbird's local folders. Thunderbird with LocalFolders are installed on PC1 and PC2 in a LAN network. What should be done so that the two Thunderbirds synchronize the local folders and their contents with each other. Where exactly are the paths entered?

use existing folder structure

Hi,

thanks for maintaining this. This is a very much needed piece of functionality, especially for corporates (=support for TB). I was active TB user for corporate environment years ago, where we mapped all users' specific subfolder of LocalFolders into a single point on Linux file share, to create a single shared e-mail storage for all users. Finally (after many GB), this started to slow startup and accidential folder move with mouse became an issue. Crazy times.

Now, today, most users have an existing folder structure for their companies, clients, suppliers, hobbies, investments, etc. These are not *.sbd folders, but normally without any extensions. Can LocalFolders be instructed to use these "normal folder trees" as TB Local Folders structure? This would enable co-living of file folders with e-mail folders, and would not require users to duplicate file folder systems in TB local folders. I suspect that *.sbd probably is required by some e-mail storage standard, but maybe you can create an exception here?

Thanks,
Kaido

Does it work with 78.10 ?

I have TB v.78.10
I installed (for the first time) LocalFolder, I see the add-on installed, but I don't have its menu.
Somethine has LocalFolder with 78.10 ?

Not allowing creation of new folder

Hi I've installed the local folders extension several times including both methods suggested. But when I try to open a new local folder I get the following message:

An error occurred while creating the local folder.
[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIMsgAccountManager.createIncomingServer]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://localfolder/content/localfolder.js :: eu.philoux.localfolder.creeDossierLocal :: line 325" data: no]

Any suggestions? Thanks

new local folder : hidden folder not seen

Thunderbird 68.6.0
OS CentOS 7.7
I installed the latest version of LocalFolder.

In Thunderbird, when I create a new Local Folder, the folder starting by a '.' (hidden folders) are not displayed therefore I can not go to .thunderbird/
I can only create the new folder under my home folder
for in $HOME/LocalFolder2
Which is not a problem by itself but :
In thunderbird, when I try to move mail in this new localFolder2, the mail is not copied in $HOME/localFolder2 but is copied
in the folder of my thunderbird mail account in :
$HOME/.thunderbird//LocalFolder2
therefore the mail disapears from the mailbox but is not displayed in the LocalFolder2 because of this double location.

Any idea to fix this issue ?

many thanks

LocalFolders issue on Thunderbird/Linux accessing previously accessible LAN storage folders

I love this extension/add-on, it is in my opinion a missing capability (network Folders) in T-Bird.
I have used it for many years to access a network drive with folders there to pull emails off of Google's prying eyes on Gmail onto a structured set of folders in my storage that makes sense to me for reference & retrieval. I also have a prior-client-efforts archive folder on my net drive as well.
{ASIDE/BKGD: Since MS Win10 decided to push the horribly corrupt 2004 spring '20 build down onto me a 5th time, each time crippling my systems with 5+min browser window and app response times, and the last time, all keyboard mappings were to CTL+ or CTL+ALT+ functions, I gave up. installed Linux (Ubuntu 20.04 w/latest updates) and not looking back.}

setting up T-Bird +LocalFolders (T-Bird for Linux, search for add-ons within T-Bird to get, install LocalFolders add-on) was fine, without a hitch. The LocalFolders accessed network folders' directory structures show up exactly as before(win10), correctly ordered, etc.

However when I click on a LocalFolders directory the T-Bird/LocalFolders engine just 'spins' forever -even overnight -and it continues. I can click on the base T-Bird inbox and continue work in email directories that are within T-Bird scope (not attached via LocalFolders) but any attempt to look inside any directory presented via LocalFolders again is an infinite spinning wait.

If there is not a known fix or process to correct this inability to view emails in Linux T-Bird+LocalFolders, is there a mechanism to offline repair/rebuild the needed indexing files within the network folders/directories? While they had no problem before, and still do correctly show the structure, perhaps the Linux T-Bird engine is looking for a specific indexing file or format thereof?

Thunderbird 78.2

Can you please advise if this add-on is planned to be available for Thunderbird 78.2.2?

Thank you
