I have considered LocalFolders to be an essential tool, I have used it for many years to achieve just what this issuer had hoped for, accessing a LAN storage file that contains my offline/local store of emails, accessible by any of my systems that I connect to them via LocalFolders, I don't want these emails floating around in Google's ether.
However, this past week I'd been re-doing this process as I'd had to move and re-setup my LAN systems a bit differently. The exact same LAN folders are there as they have been for years, using folder-per-msg MBOX configuration. However, the creation of the LocalFolders links to these is now different, and has presented itself with a rather schizophrenic tone. I have two local-lan-store files, one for emails I maintain as quick reference for many things, the other for an archive of prior client engagements, etc.
Both attached "without a hitch", presenting themselves as before -excellent. However, upon re-booting the desktop/laptops which reconnects the LAN storage via the exact same network path, the lan-folder-path is identical, the folders' content is not presented as before, and now I am even getting an error. Both LocalFolders created are errantly creating ALL of the special sub-folders even though I had explicitly not selected that option. the 2nd even now gens an error "folder not empty, or does not have .esf file" ?!! My 2nd system has a valid LocalFolders link to that very folder being complained about! Regardless, I tried a different approach, hinted by the 'error' message: I created two new empty LAN folders to create LocalFolders over, to later copy-in the live historical and extremely valuable emails/ archives. Upon doing so, I examine the folders and they had been created differently! one has an extra filterlog.html 0-byte file. all files within these folders (2 in one, 3 in the other) are 0-byte files.
This inconsistency is inexplicable. the non-adherence to the UI and creating all the excess folders is a clear bug, but the creation error that today had just presented itself, this is clear departure from the prior working model. In my mode of use, the only subfolder not of my creation should be the Trash folder.
I love the function that LocalFolders presents -it should be an integral and core function within Thunderbird. Yet this fragile state I've been wrestling with this past week is very troublesome.
