Ubisoft Shot Manager - Blender Add-on


Shot Manager is NOT UNDER DEVELOPMENT ANYMORE - It is currently maintained on Blender LTS only, without futher improvements


Shot Manager is a Blender add-on that introduces a true shot entity in Blender scenes, as well as a wide and powerful set of tools to build and edit sequences in real-time directly in the 3D context, in a non-linear way.

Up do December 2022 this tool was made for Blender 2.93 LTS and 3.3 LTS.

Please report isses you may face on the Issues page.

Since this add-on is not being developed anymore, only issues on the Blender versions mentioned above will be handled.

Note that development is on Windows 10. Reported issues and submitted PRs for other OSs are also appreciated.

Purpose

Manages the shots of a Blender scene. It offers a real-time editing directly on the data of a 3D scene. Shot Manager is very versatile and can be useful in many cases. The main use case is this: A continuous action is set in a scene, then some cameras are put at the appropriate places in the world and a shot is created for each one of them in order to record the right segment of time. This is very convenient for previz and 3D layout.

With version 2.0 you can now start even earlier in production by drawing your own storyboard directly inside Blender and to smoothly convert the shots from 2D to 3D.

History

It was initially developed for an animated TV series production in 2020 on Blender 2.83. It received a lot of features and improvements since then. It is currently used on several projects inside Ubisoft as well as on productions of various scales outside.

Even if Shot Manager doesn't have official video tutorials at the moment, it is still possible to get all the concepts and basics thanks to the contributions of the users community.

The original code is Copyright (C) 2022 Ubisoft.

when overlays tools activated manipulate the handles of a shot in timeline and then press CRTL+Z (undo) makes Blender crash.

Only sometimes Blender doesn't star anymore, until I remove the shotmanager addon

It's not consistent. It happened after I tried to understand shot manager through trial and error.
I would need a quick tuto (in English or French) about shot manager pipeline, to try to find when the bug happens.

I downloaded the "Ubisoft_ShotManager_V2-0-214.zip"
In preference > addons > I search for the location.
On the left bottom written in the info log :
Modules Installed () from 'C:\Users\PC\Downloads\_T_BLENDER\_SCRIPTS\Ubisoft_ShotManager_V2-0-214.zip' into 'C:\Users\PC\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\3.2\scripts\addons'
But nothing else happens...

I also tried with the "shotmanager-main.zip"

audio waveform and grab strips

The duration of shots usually follows the audio rhythm.
Audio plays when previewing shots but, setting a shot precise duration before preview would be great!

Also I need to be able to grab strip (shot) start and end (like in video editing), without entering start and end frame numbers in the shot list, since, as soon as you manually enter a number, it also move the play head to the start of the shot (so you have to memorize the end frame, then enter it in the shot list

Describe the solution you'd like
a Sequencer like strip above shots, or simply a button to open and scale the sequencer (zoom on first track, same time window as timeline)

Add Sequencer, zoom track and time manually, but no strip grab, play head always moving back to shot start frame:

EDIT: Hmm, looking at your video, I guess audio was added in post-prod since the back in time ellipse didn't break the audio.
Wouldn't it be nice to also be able to play the audio linearly while jumping in time?
I know it's far beyond shot manager since we only have one line of time in a scene in Blender.
Maybe if shots could populate VSE once a sequence is validated?

EDIT2: I tried to do the post-prod in Blender (I did my short film with Blender). Actually, your pipeline breaks the Blender internal way of editing a sequence which is:
create a new scene (empty)
go to VSE tab
Add > sound
Add > scene > first scene
select strip > N > define camera and duration of the strip
duplicate the strip
move strip on timeline
change camera and time offset for ellipses

'Render current' always uses 'Use Stampinfo' even if unchecked

Hello thanks for this amazing tool!

When I use 'Render Current' and uncheck 'Use Stampinfo' it will always use stampinfo for the render for the first render. if I uncheck it and render again it will render correctly and not use stampinfo.

Option to link ViewLayer to shot

First of all, great addon, it really gives Blender the capability of being a full fledge storyboard software.

After trying it, one of the best things was being able to link gpencil objects with the current shot for a better workflow, so I wonder if its possible to also link different viewlayers to the corresponding shot so things not being used can be turned off (and then on) easily, for example zooming into place and adding 3D details and then turning those details off when we get back to the main storyboard.

Hope is at least a decent proposition, thanks for this amazing tool.

Installation problem (MacOs Blender 2.93) with 1.5.65 (2021-09-20)

Hi, I can't wait to test this but it's not working on my rig (MbP 16, Macos 11.6).
It says I'm not connected to Internet... But I am!

. Starting Blender using sudo /Applications/Blender.app/Contents/MacOS/Blender.
. Using a VPN/turning off firewall.
Nothing works (the ShotManager window is nowhere to be seen).
Any ideas?

Blender 4.0 support

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
The problem is I'm not a coder and thus I am unable make the addon compatible myself.

Describe the solution you'd like
A hero, or group of heroes, to get this addon working in Blender 4.0.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Cry. Seriously, my alternative is to just cry because It seems this is a very untapped addon niche. You don't know you needed it until you have used it.

Additional context
I fully understand this addon is no longer in development and only being maintained. The fact that it is has worked across the wide amount of versions that it has worked for is unheard of for for an addon. This is just a hope an a prayer.

Shot Manager 2.x roadmap

Automatic installation of Stamp Info during Shot Manager installation

Stamp Info is another of our add-ons and it is required - although not mandatory - by Shot Manager for writing information on output images.
Currently Stamp Info has to be installed manually and it has been reported as being a step that adds considerable weight to the deployment and update of Shot Manager.

We are then addressing this point by including the zip file of Stamp Info in this add-on.

  1. create 3 shots
  2. first 2 shots start frames on 1 or higher
  3. 3rd shot on start frame 0

You will notice when addon is supposed to play shot1->shot2->shot3, it keeps looping on shot1->shot2, skipping shot3 entirely. Setting shot3 start frame on 1 or higher fixes it

When I click on Render All (with generate edit videos selected), the edit video ends up with 1280 x 960 resolution.

The edit video resolution should be same as the shot video resolution

when i'm using shotmanager, i dont get autosaves.

  1. i noticed this after blender crashed, went back file->recove->auto save, i dont see my last session saved

  2. i have 3 blenders opened, only blender#3 is using shotmanager, when i look at the auto-save folder, i see auto-saves from other 2 blenders, but not saves from blender#3.

When I have the addon installed, I have a constant stream of : fake module : addon missing 'bl info' gives bad performance! It runs constantly as an error. Further to this, when I activate the visual overlays for the timeline for the addon, I get a between 5 -20fps drop in performance.

Adding Markers to Retimer

Hello!
I've just discovered the Shot Manager and as a Previs Artist, and it rocks!!!
I was wondering if it was possible to add a checkbox for the Selected Markers in the Retimer. I am thinking of exploring more the Shot Management method in the near future, but for now dealing in really heavy scenes, it seems that the timeline Camera markers solution is still ideal to keep going at 24 fps.

In the preferences window of Blender, if you search for Ubisoft Shot Manager, there is an error saying that OpenTimelineIO module is not found. The error message asks for Blender to be launched at admin mode, which I think it is not possible in macs as it is on Windows.

Support for Blender 3.0

At the moment SM 1.5 is not supporting Blender 3.0 at at least 2 levels: the install of OpentTimelineIO and the overlay tools (the opengl API has completely changed).
Version 1.6 will address these points. ETA: mid December

Toggling Overlay Tool Display works fine in Timeline Window but not in DopeSheet/GreasePencil on MacOs (Silicon).

Very slow shot switching in Cycles, but camera cycling outside SM is fine

Describe the bug
Basically "out of nowhere" cycling through shots inside SM is now laggy (as in, when I click on any shot on SM list, there's a delay and Cycles keeps flashing 'updating/BVH/kernels', which, if my memory serves well, wasn't happening when I poked at project last time (~1 week ago). When I'm using some old addon for cycling camera (https://github.com/jomachim/Cycle-cameras), camera changes instantly pretty much, just like SM used to. I have no idea why, tried troubleshooting for 2 hours, but couldn't get repro steps.

In this, I have 3 cameras/shots. First, I'm cycling camera using addon (not SM, different one from link above)+hotkey - it does the job instantly.
Then I'm clicking on shots on SM list and you can see visible delay + Cycles keeps updating stuff, which I think it shouldn't happen - no changes to scene/lights and it, I believe, used to just reset sampling.
Then I'm back to switching cameras using other addon.

Additional context
Obviously something had to change in meantime between now and last time when I poked at project and SM was behaving fine. But I can't remember at all, nor figure out by trials/error method. I need some directions/hints to try out :(

But to sum up problem, for some reason when I'm clicking on shot on SM list, it first gives a short ~0.5s delay, then Cycles starts flashing some text about updating, noticed updating meshes/lights/BVH/kernels (although I haven't done any changes as you can see on video, just toggling cameras/shots). On solid view and eevee, it doesn't happen at all, although I'm not sure if it's helpful.

Tried blender factory reset -> install SM addon -> load .blend project fiel without UI, no changes as well.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, but you can see SM flashing different view/zoom when toggling between 2 shots, it's something I can see pretty much on all shot toggles.

Hi I'm the author of Shot Manager addon for Blender (2019). My addon is a paid product (Blender Market) of the same name and with similar functionality which I have dedicated an immense amount of time in developing. I am using a request as I'm unable to find any relevant contact details.

I like to request a modification to the addon name. Please consider that it uses exactly the same name as well as name set in bl_info and interface, This similarity in names is directly affecting my sales as potential customers are not aware that they are two different add-ons. While there is no legal necessity to change the name, I ask in the spirit of fairness, that you consider the background of existing add-ons and small businesses, which play a major role in the Blender community.

Minimal name suggestion : Ubisoft Shot Manager
I understand that a name without 'Shot Manager' in it would take considerable time to propagate the changes everywhere, but anything you could do to increase the distinction would be greatly appreciated.

Rendering functionality not working, perhaps the addon didn't install properly.

Additional context
I have a feeling this could be because I cannot install this addon properly under Linux because running it as a superuser installs the addons under root and not under my user account. I've tried manually installing the modules using pip but that didn't seem to work. If that's not the case, is it a firewall issue?

Converting to Markers for Render Farm (or other way to do so)

Hello, me again.
I am looking for a way to use Shot Manager with Render Farms.
So far, I did not come up with a way to do it as I cannot get the addon to render farms' machines.
One way I came up with would be

  • converting the shots to Markers and Camera Binding (of course, shots cannot overlap then)
  • or exporting each Shot into individual Blender files (very painful)

The first method seems a bit easier and I hope it would not mess things up that much :)
Is there a way to convert Shot Manager shots to Markers with Camera Binding?

I can't find a way to multi-select shots... I might be missing something but I have read through the docs and still can't find anything.

Splitting a Shot in Two

Hi its me again with some feedback!

It would be very useful to be able to Split a Shot at the Current Frame (maybe even with a shortcut or a button in the dopesheet).
The Icon could sit there together with the New Shot and Duplicate Shot buttons.

The Split Shot might also follow some naming rules (f.e, a shot number 1 would be split into 1a and 1b).

When having multiple Blender Scenes, Shot Manager names all the shots "-" in the new Scenes

Describe the bug
When creating a new Scene in the same Project (.blend file), the new shots cannot be renamed and their name is always "-".
Also, UI gets kind of confused and keeps the same Sequence name and has some shots from the previous scene but no camera linked to them as there is no camera in the new scene.
Not sure if it is just a bug in the naming of the Shots but it would be nice to have the Shot Manager working in multiple Blender Scenes :)

I have 2 suggestions:

  • Either make the Sequence stay the same between Blender Scenes, Basically, Sequence = Blender Scene
  • Or make a new Sequence (maybe add a Sequence list?), independent of the Blender Scenes and have the Shot List transfer between Blender Scenes

1.5.73 OpenTimelineIO "Module not found"

This is the error I get under 'Dependencies' when installing in Blender 2.93 and 3.0 alpha.
Otherwise it installs ok and seems to work.

I install in admin mode in both cases. I also remove previous version.

Love the new camera to view, such a time saver!

Make ShotManager work on Blender 2.93

Blender 2.93 uses Python 3.9 and currently there is no wheel for OpentimelineIO available. ShotManager is then not able to load.
Some changes in the code will be made soon to make ShotManager work on Blender 2.93 without OpentimelineIO in order to be able to use the add-on while the wheel is being created by the community.

Playblast/Render All not generating a complete sequence video (mp4) on MacOs (Silicon)

Click on Render All/ Playblast doesn't result in a complete readable mp4

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Click on Render all or Playbast
  2. Check destination folder.
  3. Separate mp4 shot files are there but no global one. It seems like the "gluing" of those files together hasn't happened.

The generated .mp4 file is just 11Ko, so it's basically empty (and doesn't play of course).

A playable global mp4 of the complete sequence

In case it's useful, here is a scene that works on Win10 but not on Mac (you just need to point it to a proper Destination Folder):

Mp4 Video Animation render doesn't work

It won't output the render as an mp4 file, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I've tried various render settings even changing the Output settings to Mp4 but it keeps resetting it to png when I hit render. I've tried with all both options; "Render Shot", "Render All" but it keeps resetting and outputing to png which is not ideal because I want to quickly render in eevee and preview my progress

  2. Change your output settings to MP4
