In case the user quotes the parameter and includes a space or glob characters. Caught with ShellCheck.

Notably this is generated by journalctl --output=short-full.

Assuming you have Finnish locales installed (you can check with "locale -a") you'll find that the month-names are different - something true for many other locales too, such as German ones.

For example I see this on my personal system:

  helsinki ~ $ date +"%b %B"
  tammi tammikuu

  helsinki ~ $  LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 date +"%b %B"
  Jan January

You should avoid hard-wiring the names of the months, in either long or short forms, to avoid this. Also note that the short-form of month days does are necessarily the first three letters of the long name.

Some systems have ksh, zsh, etc. as /bin/sh, and we should test those configurations. Basically this means patching the test suite to allow overriding the shell to invoke.

In particular we should test with posh, apparently - see https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/48787/29146.

We can't use | in BREs portably, which is a no-go. See https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22877457/can-a-b-expression-be-used-in-grep-bre-mode#comment34926946_22877494.

The solution is to port to EREs which will let us use | portably.

Like those seen in e.g. 019e5ec.

Because of this the test suite fails on FreeBSD.

This occurs while running the testsuite but seems to occur with just an invocation of date too. Dunno, this probably needs to be filed upstream.

$0 sometimes has the full path to the executable, not just the end of it (i.e. the name the program is installed as). This is mostly unnoticeable in development because this behavior seems to only occur when filter-other-days is on $PATH.

E.g. if the user's on a BSD system but hasn't installed gdate.
