Identify topics to cover in instructional materials

One of our goals is to produce a set of comprehensive instructional materials for SBML. We formulate this goal as follows in the last grant proposal:

produce instructional and reference materials about SBML and SBML Level 3 packages that address (a) general concepts of SBML suitable for anyone, (b) use of SBML in modeling contexts, and (c) use of SBML in software development contexts. Since SBML is not an island, an integral component will be connections to other community standards and resources. Thus, we will also explain such things as the use of annotations that follow community guidelines (e.g., MIRIAM) and use common ontologies (e.g., GO); the use of related formats such as SED-ML for capturing virtual experiments in a tool-independent format; and the relationships between modeling formalisms covered by SBML Level 3 packages and their use in real-life modeling scenarios with various software environments.

We should begin by identifying more specifically the lessons we want to teach. We shouldn't simply think them up on our own in isolation; we should seek input from other people too. To that end, this issue is a task tracker for generating a preliminary list of lessons. List of subtasks:

  • Create a wiki page where the list of lessons can be written by the team
  • Start a list of topics and have the team contribute ideas
  • Ask sbml-discuss & sbml-interoperability about problems they see people having
