nodebotsday's Introduction

NodeBots Day July 27th, 2019

Each year our community around the world gather on a single day to learn and make together. We call this NodeBots Day! This year it's on July 27, 2019

NodeBots Day is world wide event where people learn how to control the physical world with JavaScript. We want you to leave with the satisfaction of making something awesome! Each event has experts on hand to help you build your project and start you on the path to building awesome devices. Overall we're going to get together, collaborate and hack. The focus of NodeBots Day is on sharing and enjoying each other's company and JavaScript. Lots of JavaScript.

Follow @nodebots and @nodebotsday for more info.

Worldwide Community

After the first NodeBots event at JSConf US 2013, there was a desire to take the community atmosphere and spread it around the world, ideally engaging many into Node and NodeBots and strengthening the local communities. There are now many NodeBots groups that meet regularly throughout the world.

nodebotsday's Issues

Persistant Google hangout tomorrow?

Tomorrow we'll have 21+ hackers and robot enthusiasts in our space making robots which is awesome. However, I don't really know what the expertise level will be of our attendees. What I worry about is not being able to answer questions that my guests might have, which is why I think an "open mic" to the other events might be a great way to share knowledge. I can put up a google hangout up on a projector and we can take and ask questions to others around the world.

What do you think?

Tito Page for NoVA NodeBots Event

Can I has access so I can make a registration page please. I could do it through the JSConf tito account, but there is something nice about them all being branched off a single account.

Nodebots day events on nodebots.io homepage

We did a slight redesign and update of the http://nodebots.io homepage. We now have all the events up top and center. I got everyone's homepage in there if they had one, otherwise I linked to your project page in this repo. If you have a ticketing page, and I missed it, make a PR or let me know!

Organizer Notes

Have you and your fellow organizers met yet? Are you starting to make plans but not sure what other groups are doing? Transparency is the name of the game!

Add links to your notes here - and let's see if we can find some commonality :-)

nodebotsday in europe ?

hi there, i just wanted to know if you had contacts with people interested in making a nodebots day event in europe, I'm a lonely french nodebot fan, and i would love to try to launch a eu based event or help whoever is trying to make one since i do not feel that my shoulders could carry that alone.

thanks in advance

with all european nodebot's love :)

Adafruit discount code is invalid

The code that was given to organizers last night on the hangout does not work on their site. Is there any updated code that we should use?

Thanks!

RobotsConf Postcards

Hi Fellow NodeBots Day Organizers and Hardware Hackers!

With a similar mission as NodeBots Day (and many similar hands helping), we are putting together an in-person conference called RobotsConf http://robotsconf.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/robotsconf that will bring together not only Node.js developers, but Node, Python, Ruby, Java and .Net to hack hardware, spit plastics, and become friends. We would love to have you and your fellow nodebots day team members at RobotsConf. I have made an awesome postcard to fill you (and them) on all the details and it has a nice little discount code. I'd like to mail them (and some robotsconf/johnny-five stickers) to you, so I will need your mailing address and rough expected count of attendees. Please email me at [email protected] with the details and I will get them right out to you!

Thank you and enjoy NodeBots Day

Chris

Sumobot flooring

I've run suobot events on tables and industrial carpets but never outside. I'm about to run one on asphalt in a parking lot and I'm worried about the traction of the wheels (similar to the ones in the j5ik sumobot kit when I've got 4 wheels on a bot with skid steering .

Has anyone had any luck with acrylic, tarp, rubber or vinyl coverings? I've got a bunch of samples to test with in the mean time.

URGENT: Nodebots Day Organizers, please read and respond ASAP

Bocoup is doing a special version of the Johnny-Five t-shirt that's for organizers only and we need your details asap to make sure they ship with your regular t-shirt + stickers order! (Yes, this is in addition to the Johnny-Five shirts you've already requested)

Open Badge?

@jalbertbowden just asked me about open badges, I hadn't really thought about it. Thoughts? Can we grant badges for nodebots day? Is that how it works?

(I'm mobile, otherwise I'd be less lazy and do some research)

Set up official nodebotsday chat room

It'd be nice to have an official chat room (on Slack?) for nodebotsday participants can chat with each other, share photos and video clips and help solve each others problems.

Let's test it out before the day.

Oh, and let's make sure we promote it during the introduction section of the day.

[2016] Photos!

I'd love to collect all the photos from this year's events in one place. It would be nice to have some on the homepage and it's wonderful to see what everyone did. Post some links here!

Learn yourself a Hardware: slides, videos and reference material

I'm planning on running a re-creation of the awesome NodeConf Hardware workshop by @rockbot @rwldrn & @tmpvar as the starting point to get everyone on the same page. I had a look for the slides in mikeal/nodeconf2013 but didn't see them. Did I over-heat? Were there slides or just dancing and Arduino chops?

Did I hear correctly that @voodootikigod is working on a video to introduce NodeBots day and run through the blinky example? And all in under under 20 mins? Strong move, Sir. That would be super handy. Sounds like 2 videos though?

London has an amazing workshop as venue and 25 attendees, so that's sorted.... I'm now having to level up my hardware hack skills fast so any other links to useful reference material I can plough through this week to then hand on to the NodeBots London gang is appreciated. I can't be the only sucker who needs a leg-up.

O!

Kit Recommendations?

Austin is looking for a kit that will be a simple enough project for those new to NodeBots to work through.

It looks like we're looking for something mobile. We can handle some basic 3D printing if necessary, and can look into more fabrication if necessary.

Anyone from other cities have ideas? Also @pierceray am I missing anything?

Recommended parts to have on hand?

It would be nice to have a recommended parts list to have on hand so that people can construct some basic bots. I know it's not practical to have everything for every possible combination but a list of the basics to have would be good for organizers.

What I plan to have on hand already at the event.

  • Soldering station / iron
  • couple spare arduinos
  • wire cutters
  • Pile of LED's
  • Medium full rotation servos
  • Medium servos
  • Infrared proximity sensors
  • Slide pots
  • Snap action switches (like whisker switches)
  • Pile of resistors
  • Few breadboards

I'm thinking wheels of some kind might be good to have on hand? Maybe 3d print some before the event

[2016] Diversity Ticket Sponsorships

I have a few companies who would like to buy tickets and kits for people who might not be able to attend otherwise. If you work with a school, or your meetup has people who might fall under that category please drop me a line and I'll get you setup.

Nodebots Day -- Results

All,

I added Results.md as a way to have an aggregation of all the blog posts, photo albums, and videos from Nodebots Day. Please add your city and and related paraphernalia should you have it. #allhailthemightynodebot

Repo Access

Hi Team,
If you're running an event you now have write access to this repo. Please make PRs but you can merge them yourself. There was no need to have anyone be a gate keeper for your event page.

If I left anyone out, or would like anyone from your local team added let me know.

-Francis

2017 Anybody?

Was just asked about hosting for 2017. Are we a go?

NodeBots - the meetup

International NodeBots Day was a blast. Thank you to all the organizers and participants. Many people asked me at the SF event, "what’s next?”

Well, if you aren’t going already, I hope you’ll join us in Florida in December for RobotsConf. I would love to see a number us there to share the experience of NodeBots Day.

Additionally, early on in NodeBots Day evolutionary trajectory, it became clear that this really connected with a need to organize something local. I would really like to see that happen. Like NodeBots day itself, I think this will take shape in many different shapes for each of the individual communities. In some cases, it might be worth creating a new meetup altogether. In others, it could be a special meeting that happens in conjunction with the existing Node or JS group.

There are a bunch of pieces that aren’t in place yet, but if I were to imagine how I think this would turn out here’s what I have in mind. I’m going to use the SF/Bay Area as an example, though it actually has a few very unique considerations. What I’d love to see happen here is there to be some sort of regular event, probably monthly. I’m going to try to find two other co-organizers for SF. Then I think it would be great if both South Bay and East Bay had their own things. @ceejbot has talked about organizing the South Bay and maybe @maxogden would join in with the East Bay… and hopefully they would also reach out for co-organizers. Then, once every three months or so we’d come together to do a larger unified event together.

I’ve forked nodebots/www over to dshaw/sf. After I finish tweaking this, I plan on moving this back to nodebots/sf so it will resolve like beerjs/sf.

What do you think? Sound interesting? Anyone else interested in doing that in their area?

Hardware Vendor Communications

Last year I was able to negotiate a few discounts with NodeBots hardware vendors. This year, I'm doing that again, and starting earlier. Will post here when I have responses/updates.

2015 sites listed in Readme.md

Please submit a pull request with your city/region/country information for the event. Please leave a 👍 here when done!

2015 NodeBots Day planning

Let's kick off NodeBots Day planning. We have a ton of interest, let's connect the resources to the groups all across the world.

I'd like to build out working groups similar to what io.js has been doing, but first I think we should build out a "core team". Please raise your hand if you are interested and have time to contribute and help others have a great NodeBots Day 2015.

Discounts on Hardware

Are you looking to buy hardware for your event? If so, how many people are you hoping to get for your event?

Let us know so we can see what sorts of negotiations we can strum up with hardware vendors (because no one likes paying full price, especially not for items in bulk!)

(Please tell us your city, number of people, and what kind of hardware you're looking to buy.)

Hangout Archived?

@heavysixer here from team Kansas City.
I was traveling during the last hangout. I was able to get spotty cell coverage to kind of watch the youtube stream but I am wondering if the entire hangout has been archived somewhere.
