How-To: Translate this thang!

[IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE A TRANSLATION, CHECK THE "ISSUES" TAB ABOVE, TO SEE IF SOMEONE ELSE IS ALREADY WORKING ON IT. If so, maybe you can collaborate! And if no one else is, PLEASE CREATE A NEW ISSUE in this repo so that others know you're working on it!]

Step 1) Fork or download this repo
(if you're forking it, be sure to make sure your repo is on a branch called gh-pages, so that GitHub can automatically generate a webpage for it!)

Step 2) Translate the following files:

index.html -- The title & social sharing text (a few words)
words.html -- All the words for the interactive itself (~3,300 words)
(optional) notes/index.html -- The footnotes (~1,100 words)
(optional) peeps/index.html -- The full credits (a few words)

Step 3) Remember to test your translation! You can test things locally using http-server or MAMP.

Step 4) Email me with a link to your forked repo / the translated files, at N {{at}} NCASE {{dot}} ME There may be a few things here and there we need to fix! (also, if you run into any issues, please email me as well! I may take a while to respond since I'm away the next couple weeks)

Step 5) Wait for me to stop being busy and/or lazy and actually link your translated version from the main English version

An easy to read version

I asked around for critique for my translation when I got one who found it hard to read the font due to her deteriorating eyesight.

Albeit I realise that it probably won't happen, it would be awesome with a version with A. Larger text/zoomable text and/or B. a more neutral (and less awesome, to be frank) font. Or something.

Translation to Korean

I'm translating this game into Korean. Let me know if anyone is interested in collaborating!

Chapter 5, number of rounds slider not functional

In the beginning of the fifth chapter, there is a slider to choose the number of rounds to play.
Whatever the value is, the game plays indefinitely. Shouldn't it stop at the set number of rounds?

Tried with Firefox 59 and Chrome 59.

Prisoner's Dilemma explanation incomplete

At the beginning of the story we are introduced to a classic Donation Game, a special case of (non-iterated) Prisoner's Dilemma (PD). The explanation is great for the most part. However, i feel there are two large holes in the explanation that will probably confuse people that are new to this game:

1. The goal of the game

The goal of the game is to maximise your score. That's it. The goal is not to be nice, or to have more points that the other player, or to maximise overall score of all players. The only goal for every single player is to maximise its own score (however, their strategies for doing so may be completely different, some may even be irrational).

For example, the story goes:

Because if you both cooperate, you both give up a coin to gain three. (score: +2 vs +2) But if you cheat & they cooperate, you gain three coins at their cost of one. (score: +3 vs -1) Therefore: you "should" still CHEAT.

This is true, but there are subtle issues with this explanation:

  • When considering your best move in PD, it makes no sense to discuss opponent's payout. It is irrelevant for us if they will get a +2 or -1 or +million. Since most people expect your Game of Trust to be a zero-sum game, where opponent's payout matters very much, this can be confusing. PD is not a zero-sum game.
  • There should be no quotes around "should" if we want to explain the game. Three is bigger than two, so you should cheat. PD is not an ethics issue, it is a game that is a logical precursor of ethics - explaining it the other way around, saying what you should and "should" do, breeds confusion.

This would be more to the point:

Because if you both cooperate, you will give up a coin to gain three. (score: +2) But if you cheat & they cooperate, you gain three coins without giving up anything. (score: +3) Three is bigger than two, therefore you should still CHEAT.

2. The problem with PD

The problem is not that cheaters win, the problem is that there is a suboptimal Nash equilibrium in the non-iterated version that yields zero score instead of +2. By doing what's in their best interest (cheating), players end up hurting their bottom line. If players could vote to abolish cheating they would do it, because that would lead to greater personal gain.

For example, you write:

Trust is nice, but it can let others take advantage of you -- or shoot you as you come unarmed out of a trench. Sometimes, distrust is rational!

It's to early to talk about trust before the iterated version. Trust in other side solves nothing: if you knew that the other player will cooperate, you are still better off cheating.

I propose something like this:

But, if everybody cheats, we will never receive any coins from this wonderful machine! We are incapable of forcing the other side to cooperate, so instead of everyone earning two coins per round, we're stuck at zero.

Allow for more than 1 form of plurals

The game currently assumes that a word can be either in a singular or plural form, but in reality it just isn't so in some languages. For example, Russian uses the same word with counts 1, 11 and 121, another with 2 and 3, and yet another with 5. See this oldish article on how Qt framework handles this problem.

Danish translation started

I'm fairly new to this, but I liked the message in the game, and I would love for others to get that message. btw I'm translating this for my classmates to enjoy

Suggestion

This is a great presentation.

One thing that is a little awkward though, is the introduction of new strategies. A new player type is introduced, and the strategy is explained. You then get to run some scenarios with that player and others, and it gets to a result. At that point you cannot see what the strategies are of the surviving players, and there is not always an easy way to recap the strategies that they used.

So maybe adding a mouse-over on the player figures to show the strategy used?

Hello, I love this game, the idea is awesome, it is well crafted and very well thought out.

Tooltips on players during matches

One of the friends I showed the game to remarked that he can't keep track of players during matches because he can't remember them all by hat type and colour. It'd be useful for him if the game showed a tooltip on mouseover, just like it already does at the beginning of the tournament (where mousing over a button shows a tooltip with player description.)

Spanish Translation - Latin American

I know there is already a Spanish one - and it's a good one; but some key concepts have a 'slightly better way' of translating to Latin American.
Also, I will run it through several friends from different places to ensure that it is correct and has no double meaning and that nothing is lost in translation.

I believe I will need to slightly modify some of the inline styling of certain elements, as my past experiences translating from English to Spanish showed that usually Spanish takes a bit more extra space in general.

Unable to clone the repo

Cyrillic fonts

Having started work on translating into Russian, I encountered a not very pleasant appearance of the Cyrillic alphabet. Perhaps it's worth using a font like this?

translation: gender

@ncase Translating this awesome thing to German leads to a few additional gender related choices for the text. If I take some more liberty with the text I can get around most situations. I'm not yet sure if I'll always be able to do so without becoming too long for the available space. Being gender neutral in German is sadly a bit more complicated than in English. My current default, if I can not easily avoid gender, would be to go with the female version of the word. Any preferences from your side?

One specific thing: you used "they" for the labels of the payoff matrix. We don't really have a gender neutral pronoun (that I'm aware of, still asking around) that is not a new word or at least somewhat established.

Score 0 for cooperator with grudger and copycat.

My understanding is that a grudger and a copycat would always give money to a cooperator. But in this example bug (with regular payoffs), in the second round, the cooperators end up with 0 money.

Some translations aren't available when you pick some other translations

I realize that's a problem with each individual fork. But isn't there a way though to actually use only translation files instead of forks and have the rest of the app shared, all in one repo? I mean i18n-like? It's not only the matter of language picker, but consistency in general after all. You can't force people to pull and keep their repos up-to-date forever. Maybe in the worst case one person should fork back all the language repos and maintain all the languages themself?

I have no idea how this codebase works so I'm just asking. @ncase?

Where to choose language?

I think there should be an easy-to-see button to change the language of the game. Now I can't find one.

Translation to Arabic

This would help the arabic culture that i live in understand some of the trust issues that are occurring.

It would really help having this project translated to as many languages as possible.

50% of miscommunication

At the slide with configurable level of miscommunication, when you change it to 50% "all cheat" eventually wins if you give it more time.

Translation to Hindi
