I'm launching it in my bspwmrc with the recommended environment variables in a script. I am also using the shell configuration, even though I'm using alacritty, but I haven't had the issues described with using the shell configuration and alacritty.

The bug you're describing sounds exactly like something that'd happen when using shell config + alacritty. Do you get the same issue without shell config?

I can't reproduce this.
Try running pidswallow in a terminal with verbose flag -V and monitor the output when it happens. Share it here too so we can take a look
from pidswallow.
