That's a weird bug. It worked a bit differently for me, the painting cutscene didn't fix the music, but after going into the boss seemed to fix everything, even if I continue all the way to nest of evil. But if I don't go into the boss, but instead suspend or soft reset the game, the low volume "Invitation to a Crazed Moon" continues playing on the title screen, and no sound effects are played. This continues even after loading a save. I didn't get a crash.
In any case it's clear that the cutscene is causing this because it expects there to be a portrait in that room but there's not. I'll just delete the cutscene.

Actually, it seems like the title screen did crash for me after I left it sitting there for a couple minutes.
