ieeevis.org's Issues

Date inconsistencies on deadlines

@msedl noticed some of our dates are inconsistent. From his email:

When doing that, I noticed that our Camera-ready deadline
has changed from the
google docs: Saturday, August 5
to md: Friday, August 5

I now changed it to Friday, August 4
as I assume this was the intention,

Please note that this issue is also the case for workshops and tutorials
http://staging.ieeevis.org/year/2017/info/call-participation/workshops
http://staging.ieeevis.org/year/2017/info/call-participation/tutorials

In posters it has already been fixed.

Swap Papers and CFP links

Yes, sorry, so on ieeevis.org, when I click "call for participation" it takes me to a page: http://ieeevis.org/year/2017/info/call-participation/call-for-participation
We would like instead if you click on "papers" that it takes you to http://ieeevis.org/year/2017/info/call-participation/call-for-participation as currently all of the info on that page relates to papers.
However, I can imagine that maybe that page gets further additions later and that's why the link was as it is? Anyway, hopefully this makes sense (and it's always open for discussion). Thanks!

Weekly "approval" Reports

What's the approach for tackling "a weekly report of changed files that Core can approve" in a scalable way?

My guess:

  • Diff between staging and live to get a list of files that have been updated
  • Filter or otherwise package for sending out

SciVis contest dates

We need to add these to "important dates" at some point.

  • July 31, 2017 - Deadline for Contest entry submissions
  • August 31, 2017 - Team notification
  • October 4, 2017 - Official announcement of the end results at IEEE Vis 2017

Create workflow for reverting a bad production push

We don't have any procedures in place for reverting a wrong push to production. What to do?

My intuition is to constrain the set of allowable states that make production succeeds, and to have an easy, quick button that says "revert to known-good state". The problem is that there's no built-in version control on an S3 bucket. When we push to production, we lose the last state. So we'll have to figure something out on our side.

Proposed alternative:

  • make production checks for a clean base directory whose HEAD points to an existing commit on ieee-vgtc/ieeevis.org/master.
  • before pushing to the web bucket, we append to an S3 bucket that contains the log of previous SHAs of the home page
  • the panic button is make revert commit=513daf

requests from Chris North

Over email:

would you be willing to make the following additions to the VIS website to advertise the VIS dissertation award nominations?

1. add to the Important Dates page http://ieeevis.org/year/2017/info/important-dates :
IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award — CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
DEADLINE: August 15, 2017 at 5PM PDT
http://vacommunity.org/ieeevpg/bestthesis/

2. Perhaps on the main menu on the left side of the page http://ieeevis.org under Associated Events | Vis Pioneers Group
a link to: Doctoral Dissertation Award Nominations http://vacommunity.org/ieeevpg/bestthesis/

#1 seems easy, #2 may be tricky

We're waiting to hear back about ok from ross and jim.

Weekly Approval for Production (cw 13)

production...master

The link above is a file-by-file comparison between staging and production.
Please review and let us know which particular files should be pushed or held back.
Once we have approval we'll push it live to production (ieeevis.org).

update CFP menu items

Please swap the menu on the left so that Call for Participation is a header not a link, and the page that it currently points to is instead linked to from the Papers subheader item.

keynote updates

email from Ross:

Fwd: [EXTERNAL] IEEE Visualization 2017 Keynote talk
I've updated the bio and abstract for the keynote but don't have image permissions, can I get you guys to finish that off?

attachments are on that thread

Committee page "reporting"

Need to handle a special case on the committee pages that are built from GDocs

FYI - I didn’t see a way to issue a pull request for this page - if I should be handling the committee page via GitHub, let me know. From what I can tell, the committee page is still updated via the spreadsheet, not GitHub. When I click ‘Suggest a fix’ it gives me a 404 error page. I could have filed a bug but that isn’t exactly what I want to do here. Let me know how you want this page handled in future.

Weekly Approval for Production (cw 11)

production...master

The link above is a file-by-file comparison between staging and production.
Please review and let us know which particular files should be pushed or held back.
Once we have approval we'll push it live to production (ieeevis.org).

Get an EC2.micro instance to process web hooks

Every time a push to staging happens, there should be a web hook that updates the webpage. Same with production. This should be easy to do, but not before Aug mostly because of time constraints.

Supporter logo process

Some process notes via the phone call:

  • Monitor "received" column in financial fast facts sheet-- these are the "confirmed" ones to go up.
  • Get logos from Exhibitors and Supports / Supporter Logos / report.xls spreadsheet in Gdrive
    • This is an auto-generated report from when Supporters finish the online form for "supporting".

Basically:

if(supporterInReceivedColumn && supporterInLogoSheet)
addToSupporterJson()
