Either the auto-rename is not available or I didn't find how to configure it, but I was hopping to use it.
That would be super cool to have configurable file/subtitle renaming.
Is there any plan for a CLI client?

When navigating in a file explorer, when user press right click on top of a video file, an option to download subtitle with caption should appear
Now we have to always open caption and drag and drop video file into it. sometimes it is a very tedious task.

I tried several movies and the program never downloads the correct subtitle in Spanish, the English subtitles are correct. Sometimes it finds no subtitle at all - no problem, but when it says it found a Spanish subtitle, it is never the correct one.
Movies were for example: "Kiki, el amore se hace" or "Perdiendo el Norte", I tried with different versions of the movie files.
Caption should not change the default program of MKV-files.
--none, see bug above--
When dragging an MKV-video file to Caption window it changes the default program to open this MKV file to Caption.
I have to change the default program back to VLC by right-click and choose 'Open with..' and select the 'Always open this program' selection.

First I'd like to thank you for this fine piece of software.
I'd like the possibility to monitor a folder and download subtitles every X hours.
I'd like the possibility to set a specific folder to store the subtitles. Obviously if there are matching subs in this folder the file is skipped.
Please let me know what you think of this ideas.
Hi there!
I just noticed that Caption no longer downloads the .srt files. Search works fine but as soon as you select the download folder and click the download button, nothing happens. I tried different Macs and different .srt's. I am using Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7.
First off, I want to say I love the app, so thank you for the great work!
I expect Caption not to show notifications/popups when in the background and my attention is not needed.
Currently when Caption is opened in the background (i.e. I'm using another app in the foreground), and my network has issues, the Caption icon in the dock bounces and when I click on it I see the following error message in a popup:
I think it is obtrusive because my attention is not needed and there is no action to be done on my part.
I was not in the process of searching for subtitles so the information is irrelevant to me at that moment (coming from Caption).
I suggest only showing such error message when I'm actively searching for subtitles. Alternatively, have the message show as an information message without notification, e.g. perhaps at the bottom of the main Caption window.

Some more information would be useful in the "About Caption" window.
At least:
Maybe a changelog of the version ?
Hi,
Nice work
I think u should try to create the linux version using appimage , it will be easier to use and install.
https://appimage.org/
Also, Please add https://subscene.com/ because it is the only one on which subtitles of the latest episodes are uploaded within minutes after the release
Love this app!
Just a suggestion, it would be cool to add "language order" (or "language preferences"). What I mean is having a list of languages for which the subtitles search would run until it finds the match.
I'd like to contribute. :)
Right now, if you add a directory to Caption, it'll show all the files in the directory.
Shouldn't we have a whitelist?
Fixing by adding a fallback background color.
Hi,
First, thanks for this excellent software! It is very well crafted.
Have you considered adding multiple providers such as subliminal?
Just wanted to say thanks! I was searching for an alternative to SubtitleApp and found you ;) So glad there is an open source alternative now. Congrats to the team, the app is beautiful and works perfectly β€οΈ

Caption v2.0.0 and v2.0.1 have totally blank windows. I just see a windows regular window-titlebar but no content inside the window. It's pure white.
When I ran 2.0.0 it opened a secondary "auto updating" window which was blank too. So some code seems to be running, but all rendering is dead (white).

Has anyone got success on Windows?
I'm using Macbook OS Sierra (MQLT2)
I just download Caption version 2 and when I open it is just a blank windows and I can not do anything with it.
I had record the reproduce here

When I drag a folder into Caption it should find the same results as it does when I do manual searches. Manual searches for missing subtitles find more results than dragging in a folder.
If I drag a TV show folder into Caption, it will find subtitles for some episodes but not others. If I then copy the filename of the MKV it cannot find and do a manual search in Caption, it will find several results.
Trying to be able to get subtitles for all episodes in a season or series without having to manually do searches for each episode then manually renaming.

I am getting at the moment 82 linter errors and a lot more warnings when i am opening
app/containers/Home.js
Maybe do we have to improve the linter configuration to make sure that those errors are valid.
For example do we want the indenting to be spaces or tabs and how many etc.
Sorry, Wrong repo

I am currently working on making Caption for Windows and Linux. But because design is an important part of the end product, and I want Caption to be native in Windows and Linux as well, this will take a little time.
The search should be fast enough & sometimes should actually download rather than returning nothing.
Its slow sometimes & doesn't download anything for some files.
Download The.Walking.Dead.S08E04.HDTV.x264-SVA[eztv].mkv
from any site. I did it from 1337x & use Caption its slow in search & also
As the title says sometimes its too slow even though I am on a fast internet. Now I can't tell the reason but it takes so much time that I have to Google search for subtitle. Earlier it was super fast. It might be bcz of too many users or Idk if its OpenSubtitles API or something but this problem started now only. I think since the 2.0 release it had a lot of eyes so might be lot of users.

Would you like to create a separate node module for this ? This seems great and I would love to use this in https://github.com/ritz078/snape . Let me know if you need any help.
Would you consider making tracking in this software to be opt-in? It's understandable that you may need this for development purposes but since it invades user privacy it would make sense to only expose volunteers who are aware of this and consciously pick this option in order to help out with development this way rather than everyone.
Hello,
App worked in the beginning, but not anymore, for 9 out 10 movies i try to search for then it takes less then half a second before the app instantly tells me that no subtitle could be found.
The opensubtitles API and my internet combined is in no way fast enough to search and find / not find in the timeframe it attempts to search, without measuring then I'm guessing it spends less then 200ms before it returns with a "No matches".
Attempted with some of the biggest movie names in the industry and most popular torrents, they all yield the same result. Tho, TV shows have more success then movies.
People in general understand a few languages.
It'd be really useful to see at the top of the menu the languages you've search subtitles in the past.
And if there's a configuration option to see only the languages you're interested in better yet.
And if you switch between subtitles and the subtitle add the language code to the name even better.
Thanks!

Hi,
there is no user auth to opensubtitles. It is needed, because:
#VIP users
#some VPN and other PROXY are denied to download, if user is not authenticated
Please add references, that your app is using opensubtitles. We rely on this. Please read:
When using drag-n-drop to find subtitles, sometimes there are no results:
I'm assuming that Caption is using the hash of the video to find them, in this case. However, if I do type the name of the file, I can get the results I was looking for, between less relevant stuff:
So I guess in the first case it would be useful to either directly search for filename (removing the extension, of course, but in general replacing dashes or dots with spaces could help I guess), or at least show somewhere a prompt/hint for the user that once clicked does that.
Fix saving the selected language as default. Every time the app opens, it changes back to English.
hi,
in Turkish language there are some letters like "ΓΆ, Ε" etc. when I use the caption app for downloading subtitles these letters seems in the screen with other symbols. because it can not download or turn the subtitle in utf8 format. is there any settings about that. or can you solve this problem with an update
thanks.

Open with " Caption" opens the app without remembering the file or searching for subtitles
I expect "caption" to start searching for subtitles for the opened file and download/rename the found subtitle automatically.
Open with Caption from finder opens the app with no action.
Incorporating this feature will reduce the time used in opening the app and dragging the video file to the app.

Caption is great but I keep my apps organized in folders inside /Applications, and everytime Caption starts it asks me if I want to move it.
I see the practical value of this question when it is launched from the DMG, but once I have answered I think the program should stop bothering me...

As mentioned in a previous bug report, I keep Caption in a subfolder on my 2nd hard drive.
Whenever I try to launch Caption using spotlight it is not detected/found, although I can launch that way all the other software in the same subfolder. I tried to do a forced rebuilding of the spotlight index, but it didn't solve the problem.
However, if the app is in the /Applications folder it works... that's puzzling.
