It would be good to track the source of a reference sequence. More precisely, given an officially accessioned reference sequence R and a user modified sequence U, we say U is alpha-derived from R if a) R and U are of the same length and b) the per-base sequence divergence, excluding gaps, is smaller than an arbitrary threshold alpha. Datasets/studies using sequences derived from the same accessioned reference can be queried together. This helps consistencies across multiple data sets even if they use genomes slightly modified in different ways.
