r8152's Introduction

DSM driver for realtek RTL8152/RTL8153/RTL8156 based USB Ethernet adapters

This is an RTL8152/RTL8153/RTL8156(2.5Gbps or 1.0Gbps) driver package for Synology NASes.

You may also be interested in my other projects:

Supported NAS platform

  • DSM 7.x and 6.2
  • Almost all models released after 2017
    • Older models also work, but you may not have enough performance.
    • Compatibility reports by the community will help you.

You can download drivers from the release page and determine a proper driver for your model from knowledge base of Synology,

I very much appreciate it if you could report whether it works. If you have any problems, the Troubleshooting page may help.

NOTE: I recommend using front ports to connect devices because some users reported stability issues when they use rear ports.

Author's environment

The author uses the following environments daily and has confirmed that they work stably.

  • NAS
    • DS918+ (apollolake) with 16GB RAM
    • DSM 7.2-64570 Update 3
    • Ethernet dongle
      • USB-LAN2500R2 (RTL8156BG, only in Japan.)
  • PC
  • Network switches
    • main: QNAP QSW-2104-2T (Broadcom BCM53161: x3 2.5Gbe / x2 10Gbe)
    • sub: keepLINK 5 Port 2.5G Switch (Realtek RTL8372: x5 2.5Gbe / x1 10G SFP+)
      • If you are looking for an affordable 2.5Gbe switch, I recommend products using the RTL837x family, which is a newer generation of chips and consumes less power. Many other products are available from many vendors.

Supported RTL8156(2.5Gbps) based devices

INFO: Products using RTL8156BG have dramatically lower power consumption(up to 64% decrease) and heat generation than those using RTL8156.

See the Compatibility page for the latest information.

  • If you have other products not listed and they do not work, please create an issue with the output of lsusb.
  • If you are using a product with a Type-C connector, you will need a connector or cable to convert it to Type-A.
    • For stable device operation, I recommend using a USB 3.2gen2 10Gbps compatible cable.
    • A 5Gbps cable is sufficient for this driver to work, but a 10Gbps capable cable can be expected to have higher transmission quality.

How to install

Preparation

Enable SSH and login your NAS.

Installation

  1. Go to "Package Center"
  2. Press "Manual Install"
  3. Choose a driver package downloaded from the release page.
  4. [DSM7] The installation will fail the first time. After that, run the following command from the SSH terminal:
    • sudo install -m 4755 -o root -D /var/packages/r8152/target/r8152/spk_su /opt/sbin/spk_su
  5. [DSM7] Retry installation.
    • You don't need the above DSM7-specific steps at the next time.
  6. Reboot your NAS.
    • This procedure is not usually necessary, but many have reported that a reboot was necessary, so please reboot just in case.

Warning: Do not use Safari for this operation.

How to configure

You can configure the IP addresses and MTU of the added NICs from the DSM UI in the same way as the built-in NICs.

Option: I recommend setting MTU to 9000 and SMB protocol version to v3 for better performance.

Performance test

Environment

  • DS918+ (USB-LAN2500R)
  • DSM 6.2
  • direct connection with PC (AQN-107: discontinued, but almost equivalent to ASUS XG-C100C)
  • native iperf3
    • using docker causes high CPU load

New r8152.c from realtek

Hello,

I noticed that there is a new r8152.c driver form Realtek released 2020-Apr-20. File size is 556KB.
ver. r8152-2.13.0

The current r8152.c file size is 367KB. r8152-2.12.0

r8152-2.13.0.zip

driver issues under sustained full duplex load on rtd1296

has anyone sucesfully used the rtd1296 driver - I'm seeing speed drop to zero (requiring if down/up to clear) testing it with full duplex loads (either 'real world' copying large files simultaneously in both directions, or synthetically testing using iperf3)

Support DS1513+ with ASUSTOR AS-U2.5G

Hi~~
Could you please support Support DS1513+ with ASUSTOR AS-U2.5G?
Due to I would like to use the ASUSTOR AS-U2.5G on a DS1513+ with DSM 6.2.2, thanks a lot.

I don't understand how to make the driver work on the Synology NAS

The broadwell driver is installed on the DS3617xs normally (r8152-broadwell-2.12.0-1.spk or r8152-broadwell-2.12.0-3.spk is available), but does not start. In the control panel, the status is "Stopped". The USB module on the RTL8156B chip, manufacturer OPEN-SMART is connected. How do I solve this problem?
PS:
I'm not a good Linux expert. I executed the command "sudo dmesg" and got a lot of lines among which there was an error related to r8152: version magic '4.4.59+ SMP preempt mod_unload ' should be '3.10.102 SMP mod_unload ' What is this?

2.13.0-1 DS918+ (Apollolake) LAN3 Virtual Maschinen Manager not available

Description of the problem

I have installed the latest driver and want to use my LAN3 as the main LAN. The other internal 2 LANs should not be used. I cannot select LAN3 under Virtual Machine Manager Network. Does anyone know the problem?

Replace this line with your answer.

DSM version: 6.2.3
Driver version: r8152-avoton-2.12.0-3.spk

One issue I noticed when using USB network adapter is that IPv6 address is assigned even though the option is set to OFF in DSM.
I have not tested MTU changes.

Using rear USB port (front 3.0 is not present on this model).

DS1815+

I would like to use an ASUSTOR AS-U2.5G on a DS1815+ DSM 6.2.2

I've begun to try to compile this myself but I've not succeeded for the moment.
I tried both to cross-compile on a VM and to direct compile on the DS1815+ and got stuck, honestly my knowledge of linux is too weak and I'm not sure where to start and what to use/install.

(I'd like to see how you made it, I'm eager to learn how to do it myself.)

RTL8156 on Synology DS1812+ Cedarview

Breaking w/ template format just to cross post the aquantia chip/driver has the same issue as this one does on this box.
Registers proper speeds w/ connections at both ends but real world performance is less than 1Gbps regular connection
It is pretty well detailed there, but anyone searching for the issue chip/driver can refer to that issue log for details.

bb-qq/aqc111#14 (comment)

Mentioned it might be a signal issue w/ daughterboard, or maybe issue building this for cedarview(?)

Can't trust data integrity when using this driver with an external adapter.

Description of the problem

Wow this is a different one. I rsynced a file between two Synology's. I ran all flavors of sha sum and md5 from the root shell and confirmed the hashes were the same. What was strange is my hash-based duplicate finders were not seeing the files as the same. In my bash terminal I checked the hashes of the files mounted to my computer over smb. What was odd was the hashes matched only one of the Synology's. The hashes produced through this driver and the pluggable 2.5gb adapter were not only different but rotating each time I checked. I disconnected the share and used another IP to mount the share from an internal nic in the nas. Now the hashes match and don't rotate. Disconnected and reconnected a few times to each and confirmed the behavior.

This is very bad. I moved 1.5TB from one nas to another and used a duplicate finder to easily remove the files from the original nas. Call me paranoid but I like to make sure I'm not deleting something that's not IDENTICAL. So out of 1.5 TB of data, my duplicate finders fond 0 files changed when using the pluggable + driver. When using the built-in nics of the computer and nas, All 1.5 TB is seen to be duplicated.

Here I was hunting down rsync issues with not actually copying the data bit for bit. I don't know that I can trust that the data I get and send through this adapter is actually intact. The whole reason I bought this nic was to speed up deduping data over smb.

Any idea what could be causing this?

DS416Play success with one remark!

Great work, I used the Club USB-A 3.1 GEN 1 TO RJ45 2.5GB, and it worked instantly!
Only if i out a second Club adapter in the ds416play, the second usb adapter is not working.
The light blinks with interval of 30 secs, but isn't visible in /sys/class/net.
But still great work!

DS414 driver request

I had a Synology DS414 based on Marvell Armada XP MV78230, can you help to update a driver for this type CPU?

Many thanks:)

OK vs 8153 but not vs 8152B

Hi,
First thanks a lot for this nice driver.
I tested 2 adapters on a Synology DS415+., USB 3.0 output.

  1. Syncwire 1Gb adapter, model No. SW-AD061, Chipset RTL8153 => success !
  2. CableMatters, USB 2.0 FastEthernet adapter, model No.202023, chipset RTL8152B (not 8152 afaik) => the NAS is not seen by the router (direct RJ45 link, I rebooted the NAS, ...)
Is your package ready for RTL8152 but not for RTL8152B ? or simply it should work ?
    BRgds

Notes: Informal SMB transfer speed to a Windows 10 x64 PC with NVMe SSD connected to g9 (10Gbps) QNAP QXG-10G1T (Aquantia AQtion AQC107 Chipset) results in 220MB+/sec speeds.

Since I'm running Open vSwitch for Virtual Machines on the DS1815+, I had to SSH into the box and manually run:

ifconfig eth4 up

Before if would show up in the Control Panel, allowing me to configure.

DS218+ Success Report

Working perfectly well with RTL8153 based USB card (TP-link TL-UG310)

I intended to set up a link aggregation with the onboard NIC but seems to be blocked by firmware. (create link aggregation option is missing, two LANs are detected and works perfectly fine independently)

One issue I noticed when using USB network adapter is that IPv6 address is assigned even though the option is set to OFF in DSM.
I have not tested MTU changes.

Using rear USB port.

Setting lost after reboot

I found a solution to solve the problem.

In control panel -> schedule task, add a task:

user account: root
event: boot

and put your synonet related command in the task setting page -> user defined script

Done. After NAS reboot, the ASUSTOR 2.5G USB network adapter is automatically working.

DSM Uses this interface as its default

Description of the problem

I have noticed that DSM tries to use this interface as it's the primary interface. It is not the first interface it routes with but it is the primary interface it wants to use for applications within DSM. This interface is connecting to a computer as a management point to point and is not being used for network ingress. I attempted to set up the Active Directory application and even Active Directory tries to use this interface for the domains NS. While I have experienced one kernel panic, I believe this is an issue with how DSM allocates adapters and not with the driver. I do not have knowledge about Synology packages so I'm not sure if there's a way in the spk to prevent the adapter from being used as the default.
