As discussed on IRC, I agree with the proposed solution: run git rebase and then if it doesn't apply run git rebase --abort and print an error message. The error message should be clear about what just happened and give instructions on how to proceed

Think some variant of #81 (comment) would solve it in a nicer and simpler way.
