goxdr's Introduction

# To build from a release that already has a configure file:

    ./configure
    make

# Documentation

Documentation is available on-line at the project home page,
<http://xdrpp.github.io/xdrpp/>.

To generate and view a local copy of the documentation, run:

    doxygen
    xdg-open doc/html/index.html

Finally, if you have neither an Internet connection nor doxygen, a
copy of the documentation can also be found in the `gh-pages` branch
of the repository, which you can access as:

    git archive --prefix=www/ origin/gh-pages | bsdtar xf -
    xdg-open www/index.html

# Building

To build after a git checkout that doesn't have ./configure, run:

    ./autogen.sh
    ./configure
    make

As is traditional, the software can be installed with

    make install

# To enable the cereal test

You need cereal in the top directory (before running `./configure`),
which you can get by running:

    git clone https://github.com/USCiLab/cereal.git

(Or make cereal a symlink to an already checked out copy.)

# To enable autocheck tests

You need autocheck in the top directory. Run:

    git clone https://github.com/thejohnfreeman/autocheck.git

(Or make autocheck a symlink to an already checked out copy.)

goxdr's Issues

goxdr does not format generated code

It would be nice if goxdr could format its generated code using gofmt -s for two reasons.

  1. Formatted code is easier to read.
  2. Many golang linters will complain if a go file is not formatted correctly.

Suggest "go install" instead of "go get" in README

When trying to install goxdr with the command go get github.com/xdrpp/goxdr/cmd/goxdr as suggested in the README, I got the following error message:

$ go version
go version go1.17.8 linux/amd64

$ go get github.com/xdrpp/goxdr/cmd/goxdr
go: downloading github.com/xdrpp/goxdr v0.1.1
go get: installing executables with 'go get' in module mode is deprecated.
	Use 'go install pkg@version' instead.
	For more information, see https://golang.org/doc/go-get-install-deprecation
or run 'go help get' or 'go help install'.

It succeeded once I used the command $ go install github.com/xdrpp/goxdr/cmd/goxdr@latest.

As I understand it, one must use go install to install programs and go get to install packages provided we are in a directory tree that contains a go.mod file.
