vi

Basic vi commands

This repo contains some commonly used and important vi commands alongside their descriptions.

What is vi (visual editor)

vi is a default visual text editor that comes with the UNIX operating system.

It's also known by its acronym, "vim," short for Vi IMproved.

A brief history of vi

The original code for vi was written by Bill Joy in 1976, as the visual mode for a line editor called ex that Joy had written with Chuck Haley. Bill Joy's ex 1.1 was released as part of the first Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) Unix release in March 1978.
