gr-adsb's Introduction

gr-adsb

Python framer and decoder blocks for processing ADSB messages in GNU Radio. Includes example flow graph for end-to-end processing of messages.

Installation

mkdir build
cd build
cmake ../
make
sudo make install

Note: If you are running MacPorts you might need to change the installation path. Use something like this: cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/local ../

Run with Docker

Either build it yourself (might take a while):

docker build .

Or pull it from the Docker HUB:

docker pull wnagele/gr-adsb

Once you have the image you can run it in privileged mode (to give access to the USB host):

docker run --privileged -it wnagele/gr-adsb

License

Apache License, Version 2.0

Usage

Load the flowgraph from the examples directory in GNU Radio Companion. It should work out of the box and provide you with decoded messages in CSV format on STDOUT.

It uses the Osmocom source by default with gain settings that suit a RTL SDR dongle. If you want to use any other peripheral make sure to test different gain settings with a waterfall plot to see what works well. The input to the ADSB framer expects the bit sequence at double the actual data rate (to discern the falling and rising edges). If you want to sample at higher rates you will have to ensure that the eventual bit stream matches that rate (2Msps).

gr-adsb's Issues

CppUnit dependency is not needed.

The CppUnit dependency is not really needed. Gnuradio does not make that a hard requirement. And CppUnit is only needed/used when running make test.

Setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH for cppunit doesn't work.

The cmake stage fails because cmake does not find cppunit include files even with PKG_CONFIG_PATH set properly. The cppunit is in a non-standard location. I worked around it by adding the paths to cmake/Modules/FindCppUnit.cmake.

If I run
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/here/is/cppunit/lib/pkgconfig pkg-config --cflags cppunit

or

PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/here/is/cppunit/lib/pkgconfig pkg-config --libs cppunit

I get correct results.

Receiving on HackRF

Great project! I'm having some trouble receiving very much data on the HackRF compared to eg. dump1090. I know that you cannot do a 1:1 comparison, as Dump1090 does a lot of magic behind the scenes and I've tried adjusting the threshold values all the way down to 100m/110m.

Are there any other way to pass more data through to the framer than via. a threshold?

error decoding speed

note that I have parity checking turned off...

Chararacterize minimum signal requirements

I'll probably send a PR to close this later tonight - gonna go hang out at the airport for a little while with 4 different receivers, a couple of antennas, ... - just as soon as I get some test measurements and recordings.

Sample rate, bandwidth, SNR ...
