We switched from seeked to setCurrentTime() to ensure we are notified of the user's (exact) desired seek target and to make sure all outstanding asynchronous tasks for the previous playback position could be aborted immediately. There is no event that is guaranteed to fire immediately before and not in parallel with a seek as far as I'm aware. I believe something along those lines would be necessary to decouple buffer management from a tech implementation.
I love the idea of removing the requirement that HLS subclass an existing tech :)
