gubachs's Issues

UN SEEA LCCS & LCML

The UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting developed a Land Cover Classification System (LCCS)

Land Cover Classification System

Also useful:

  • LCML - land cover meta language : has also been developed for use as a framework for clas-sifying land cover and comparing systems internationally.

DiffTree comparisons?

GUBaCHS aims to address the issue of comparing multiple classification hierarchies for habitat classification.
What tools exist for comparing classification hierarchies?

...I don't know of many.
This may be somewhat of an open data visualization/analysis problem.

A related project/publication on creating DiffTrees from hierarchies is "TreeVersity" from the CATT lab.
Although this focuses on hierarchies more resembling budgets I think there are a lot of useful concepts we could use here.
Two versions of treeversity exist:

Extending this concept further we might create a similar visualization for classification hierarchies like those listed here.
Challenges might include:

  1. comparing >2 trees
  2. node class definitions between trees are slightly different. ie: "forest" from one hierarchy may not be 100% identical to "forest" in another hierarchy

It seems like an interesting dataViz problem that also has valuable application in this space and may be generally useful to other communities.
I would expect multiple publications from pursuing this.
One CS pub outlining the concept and another applying the methods to the hierarchies in GUBaCHS.

I would be excited to start writing code to create these visualizations but need to identify co-authors who would be interested discussing these ideas and playing with the prototypes.

Forest Inventory Analysis

https://www.fia.fs.fed.us/

FIA reports on status and trends in forest area and location; in the species, size, and health of trees; in total tree growth, mortality, and removals by harvest; in wood production and utilization rates by various products; and in forest land ownership.
