Project Connect App

๐Ÿ’ก Motivation

The goal of this project is to crowdsource and gamify the validation of geolocation data for schools around the world. We need as much help as we can get by looking at satellite imagery at predefined GPS coordinates, and corroborate whether what the user is seeing could be a school or not.

This effort is framed within Project Connect, run by the UNICEF Office of Innovation, with the goal of knowing where schools are and how connected they are to inform programs around education, health and emergencies. Project Connect emerged out of a need that was expressed by many UNICEF partners and UNICEF Country Offices.

๐ŸŽฎ App

The app was live online between 2020 and 2022, but it is no longer available online. It was played 240,000 times by about 800 different people through a small number of corporate partnership programs. It was never released to the general public.

Refer to the game code repository for the actual code.

๐Ÿ“‚ Roadmap

  • Gamification: Idea exploration to further improve the user experience.

  • Incentivization: Building financial and non-financial incentives as outlined in unicef/incentives, with a possible blockchain component.

  • Integration: Integration with other mapping tools from Project Connect, which involve two separate workstreams in the backend and in the frontend.

๐Ÿ’™ About UNICEF

projectconnect-game's Issues

Repeating locations

Kudos on making a great game โค๏ธ

Been playing for around 15 mins and almost all my locations seem to be repeating. It seems like i might have hit a limit on how much i can review and its not clear if i should just keep going?

Keyboard shortcuts for desktop

I saw this mentioned elsewhere but just dropping it here again as something that would be super useful, especially when mapping on desktop, in the zone mapping looking at imagery, having these would speed up mapping significantly, combined with an increased batch size (maybe selectable at the start?)

ML consideration?

Hi - this project was sent around my work Slack and so I was taking a look at it when it struck me that the task being asked of users seems like it would be quite well suited to a ML algorithm.

Is this something you've already considered?

I'm no ML engineer myself, but perhaps the time spent in developing user management systems and adding sufficient gamification / incentivization could be spent on training an AI to recognise the patterns you're looking for
