Hi,

I tested a recent version of your .emacs configuration (f7de4) and after a few days, when I'd not closed Emacs, I noticed Emacs was starting to get sluggish. When I ran 'top' I noted that %CPU for Emacs was about 20-40% - even when I wasn't using Emacs. This was on my laptop, which I thought was running down the battery quicker than usual, so I suspect the CPU load had been going on for a while.

Any thoughts on this, or how I could troubleshoot it?

Note: I've now restarted Emacs and opened two small .org-buffers and one text file. With Emacs not in focus, 'top' reports %CPU as about 3.0.

Perhaps the directory backups/ should not be accessible by everyone?

drwxrwxr-x   2 chr chr   4096 aug 29 07:17 backups/

Rationale: The directory will contain files that you maybe don't want every user to be able to see.
