Week 2: Overviews

o The week overviews tell what activities are in the unit, but not the content students will learn about. Let’s include info about the topics so we can get more of a sense what each unit is about.

Learning Activity 2.1

I don't understand this activity and the instruction does not fit with this format. For example, there is no "rubric above" that I see.
But essentially I don't understand how someone is supposed to look at a rubric and be able to assess the grade that each learner should receive..... There is no indication of what content they are supposed to apply to the rubric to.

In fact, this really isn't a learning activity. Shouldn't be included as part of the grading instructions for whichever assignment it applies?

Home Page

Colin,
I was just looking at the Home page setup. Right now there doesn't seem to be any button for assignments. Will there be one?
A suggestion I have is this: Use the format of Overview, Learning Activities, Assignments for the buttons. The Notes pages can be directly linked to within the Learning Activity that they are related to rather than on the Home page.
This will keep the Home page at a high level course element delivery vehicle, rather than mixing it up with various types of information and delivering some specific information LA activities.

Unit 4 LO's

Doug,
After I read the six Learning Objectives for this unit, I was exhausted. Each one is a high level cognitive skill that requires substantive information and time to formulate. I'd be satisfied if students could accomplish two or three. These six seem very tough to acheive. How have students accomplished all these in the past?
I also note that a intro into Systems Thinking is indicated as a key component of the content, but I don't see it referred to directly in the LO's. Unless application of systems thinking is implied in the LO's, it would be good to include it directly in the LO's.

With regards to LO #6, I think I may have mentioned this before, but when I read it, it seems to me that this is something that cannot be measured within the course and so I'm not sure that it is appropriate as a learning objective. How can this outcome be measured within the information submitted and assessed by the instructor within this week's activities?

Unit 2 page

Not sure what's really happening with this page. It is not in a format that I recognize and seems to have a bunch of duplicate information. I assume that this is a dump of content that will be cleaned up in the future. This page should include only,
Overview,
Unit Learning Objectives
Resources

Any Learning Activity should be moved to the Unit 2 Learning Activities page.
Any information delivered by the instructor should be moved to Unit 2 notes. If there is specific information for a learning activity, we can make a Unit 2 Learning Activity X page.
Any Assignment instructions should be placed in the appropriate Assignment page.

Unit 3 Learning Activities

Sorry guys, I'm still really confused with the organization of this page.
Learning Activity 3.1 is simply a link to the Notes. It should at least provide some instruction for the student. Eg. Read the LA 3.1 Notes and then answer the following questions

After the LA comes something title Unit Learning Outcome.... with words underneath it that refers to LA 3,1 rather than the Unit. I guess this mis-titled and should be Learning Activity Outcomes.

Immediately after the Outcome section, is something else, which seems like an instruction to read " A systems Thinking Primer .... but references Unit 4 notes..... Why are Unit 4 notes being delivered in the Unit 3 Learning Activities?

Then come a series of questions for people to answer about the readings ....

Not sure what the Learning Activity references refer to... Are these references for the Learning Activity Notes?

Pre-reading and introductory Learning Activities

• The Week 0 material is a full unit, complete with commentary and activities. We should add topics and more instructions for clarity.
o When in the unit to read certain chapters
o What to do with the questions asked of them (e.g. answer in a reflective learning journal – in preparation for assignments).
o There are 3 activities listed:
 0.1: Students read an article and answer questions
 0.2: Students read questions and make a proposal
 0.3: Students read Pressbooks instructions (do they set up one?
o However, there are more activities in those pages
 Reading the chapters listed on the reading overview (we need to now when students should read them)
 Fill in the Leadership Versatility Chart
 Fill in the chart on My Internal or External Locus of Control
o These should be activities as well. For those that will make up assignments, we may want to mention that.

Week 2: 2nd Overview

o The learning outcomes seem a bit vague or repetitive. Are they the same in each unit? There doesn’t seem to be anything related to a new topic introduced in the unit.
o Videos – these should be introduced in the learning activities, with some commentary (intro, questions to consider, length of clip, etc.) . Note that one video link is broken, and overall there is over an hour of video clips to watch. We may want to make some optional.

Unit 5

Some of the same comments around organization of the material. I'm curious that many of the LO's are the same as Unit 4. I've not seen this kind of design where the LO's are the same or based on generic criteria. LO's generally are based on the specific information presented in the unit and achieved through the Learning Activities.
I'm not sure how these blogging activities are being treated. Are they assignments - graded activities, or are they learning activities - ungraded.

Otherwise, similar to Unit 4, what is shown in this unit as learning activities I read as Activity Notes. I don't see anything that instructs the student as to what activity they are supposed to do. Read, Watch, Review, Write, Reflect .... these are the kinds of verbs I'm looking to see in Learning Activities. As it stands now the students are going to read what is there and not know what to do.

Unit 4 learning activities

Activity 4.1. I actually do not see what students are asked to do. Clearly they're going to Read something ... but what are they going to do with it? From what I see, the information provided is a synopsis of a variety of information that is more along the lines of Activity Notes. Please review.

I'm concerned that if this is the only learning activity and information being presented in the unit, how are all the Unit LO's going to be achieved?

Week 1: Learning Activity 1.1

– confusing. Learning outcome should be in unit overview page. Assignment rubric is unclear and needs explanation. Not sure why/how students evaluate the article based on the rubric. Need to discuss this assignment.

Unit 1 Learning Activities Page

On the Unit 1 Learning Activities page. I've asked a whole bunch of questions about the structure and content that appear in red text.

Unit 6

Giving people a week to breathe is not a bad thing. Maybe we should state explicitly in an Objectives area.
To catch up on any outstanding readings or assignments.

Also, these assignments are right now appended to this Unit Overview page. In this and all other instances I assume that they will be cut and pasted into a page with the appropriate assignment #. Is that correct?

Pre-Course Preparation

• At the bottom of the page, it lists Course Setup and Prereading sections, so we can/should tell students to go there next.

U1 Page Updates

I've been looking at the Unit 1 page. The page combines what we have previously broken out into Overview, Activities and Notes. I've redistributed the information to the appropriate pages. The Overview, Activities, Notes (there are now Notes pages for each LA. They are listed in the Pages with the syntax Activity 1.1 Notes. This is format that we should use going forward based on the previous courses.

Week 1: Assignment 1

– I’d suggest the instructor mark the first class assignment and give feedback. This will help students see what the standard is.
o I’m wondering also how the students feel about describing their weaknesses online for their peers to grade.
o Rubric – I’d suggest slight working changes.

Pre-Course Preparation

• The first item under Course Setup is Overview, which takes us to Week 1 – but we should be in Pre-Reading, correct?

Unit 1

Just reading through this again. Not sure how I missed this but..... how do people get the prereading information? Not sure how this works.... are people enrolled in this course container four week prior to the actual start date so they can get the instructions on the pre-reading

Reading Resources

I note that in the Overview there are quite a few reading resources listed. However, I don't see instructions to students on when to read these resources. There should be a specific instruction on when to read the required resources.

Unit 3 page

Similar to Unit 2 page. Looks like we just need to spend some time moving content around to the appropriate pages.

  1. Overview
  2. Learning Activities
  3. Notes - Unit level and/or Learning Activity level
  4. Assignments

Unit 2 Table

Please send csv of the table.

Dates in course materials

Doug,
I just noticed that you are including dates and times etc in the unit pages (see LDRS501/_pages/unit-2.md ). We need to avoid this altogether as these course materials will be used for multiple sections. The logistical details will be built into the WordPress site, rather than the Unit overviews and content pages.

You can say things like "On the first day of week 1 there will be an optional Zoom meeting at a time suitable for most students"
It is not a problem at all that you have that info in the Learning Plan.
