Hold down 'q' ,'w' or 'e' if coining up.
from supermodel.
When in attract mode, press 'q', 'w' or 'e' to get to the character select screen.
q = far view
w = mid view
e = first person
I don't think the real hardware had a player 1 start button, although Supermodel will emulate one.
I don't think you can change view in game either. On the real machine, you were probably expected to choose your character and then just hang on for dear life.

ahh I see now. There was no start button on OG hardware. You'd use one of the colored buttons Blue/Button 1 (q, far view), Red/Button 2 (w, mid view) or Green/Button 3 (e, first person) BEFORE adding credits as adding credits auto starts the game.
When in Free Play you can simply use one the coloured buttons to start the game in your preferred view, as no credits need to be added which would have otherwise auto started the game.
When using start in Free Play mode, Supermodel simply uses Button 3/Green/1st Person to start the game as there was no actual start button on original hardware.
In essence:
-If using credits select a view button before adding a credit. (Start isn't used)
-If using Free Play simply start the game by pressing the colored view button you want. (Start can be used but shouldn't, unless you want 1st Person)
Button 1/Blue = Far View
Button 2/Red = Mid View
Button 3/Green = 1st Person
Sorry for the million edits. This took a while to figure out. Closing issue.
