REQUIRED: Benefits for the OSPO Ecosystem

This is a very important section to understand how your organization or community could help growing the OSPO Ecosystem and impoving OSPO best bractices across industries.

  • FOSSA’s mission is to increase the adoption and encourage the sustainable use of open source, which is obviously well-aligned with the mission of every OSPO.
  • We do this by helping OSPOs reduce the license compliance and security risks that can come from adopting open source.
  • We have extensive experience working with OSPOs at some of our largest customers, and we want to support the community by bringing that experience to a broader audience. This includes collaboration with Heather Meeker and Kate Downing, both FOSSA advisors, on best practices and policies for managing IP risks.
  • We also want to support the community by sponsoring events like OSPOlogy Live.

What do you expect from TODO Group as an OSPO Associate?

Where and how could TODO Group help your organization and community?

  • First and foremost, we want to learn. We see TODO as an opportunity for us to work more closely with the leaders in the OSPO community, and see how a diverse group of innovators is defining, running, and measuring their OSPOs. We want to build the best tools for solving the most challenging problems with the community.
  • We also recognize the opportunity for brand awareness, of course. But we’re smart enough to know that awareness comes from being a valued member of the community, not from any direct marketing. We've long viewed LF and its compliance programs as the gold standard, we know our customers do too, and a formal association would highlight our commitment to both the open source community and the OSPOs tasked with promoting responsible open source adoption.

Please check the documentation to learn how.

Please make sure your open source initiative:

Once this issue is created, TODO PM will review this issue and submitt a PR to the OSPO Landscape.

Migration to landscape2

Hi! 👋

We've been working on a new version of the landscape generating software, landscape2. This new version relies on the same landscape.yml file as the main data source, so nothing changes regarding adding or updating entries in the landscape.

The CNCF landscape has already been successfully migrated to landscape2, and we'd like to start migrating more landscapes 🙂

We are already building the OSPO landscape using landscape2, you can check it out at https://ospo.landscape2.io/. It'd be great if you could give it a try when you have a chance and, whenever you are ready, we can proceed with the migration.

The process is very simple and would involve the following steps:

  • Add/update some DNS entries
  • Stop background automated processes that write to this repository (CNCF bot)
  • Unlink this repository from Netlify
  • Update README file and clean up some files no longer needed in this repository
  • Setup the landscape2-validate-action to validate the landscape.yml file on PRs (optional)

We can take care of the last 4 points, you'd only need to update the DNS entries.

Landscape2 supports embedding a view with items in a category/subcategory in another website, but it works slightly different than landscape1. If parts of this landscape are embedded using this mechanism on other websites, we'd appreciate if you could let them know about how it works now.

Please ping me if you have any question 😉

[Idea] Add new section: OSPO Service providers

There are many organizations that offer services to OSPO in many areas (consulting, legal, analytics, etc). Maybe it would be interesting to have a dedicated section by adding a new card to the landscape. Some of the organizations appearing there can be:

  • Tidelift
  • Wipro
  • OpenChain
  • ???

@caniszczyk comments, thoughts?

  • We would like to talk about what OSPOs could do to increase the security of their own use of open source code,
  • ...to better secure their own company-owned projects,
  • ...and improve the security of upstream OSS they use and depend upon.

What do you expect from TODO Group as an OSPO Associate?

Where and how could TODO Group help your organization and community?

  • We would love to reach more OSPOs with a common "Security Pledge", co-developed with you, to help drive adoption of better practices and tools across both community and corporate open source communities.

Update Readme to accurately reflect the project and criteria

The project README contains a lot of text makes sense when talking about individual open source projects, but makes less sense when we are talking about organizations. Examples:

https://github.com/todogroup/ospolandscape#new-entries

Projects must be open source and hosted on or mirrored to GitHub.
Projects with at least 300 GitHub stars that clearly fit in an existing category are generally included. Put the project in the single category where it best fits.

https://github.com/todogroup/ospolandscape#best-practices-badge

The interactive landscape displays the status (or non-existence) of a badge for each open-source project.

The updated readme should reflect the nature of this project, and make it clear what the criteria are for inclusion of an organization as an OSPO Adopter or a TODO Group Member. Some cases to consider:

  • How do we handle companies who previously adopted, but no longer are staffing, an OSPO?
  • How do we handle organizations for which we no longer have good contact information?

Should we add Backstage.io ?

https://backstage.io/ "An open platform for building developer portals" is an CNCF Sandbox project, originally by Spotify, to provide an inner source portal.

It is a tool aimed for inner source development (might be for open source as well?). I think it can be relevant for the OSPO, but it might be too developer-focussed. What do you think?

Please, provide more details about the issue that you are facing:

  • How is it that some logos have a white background and some have a grey background? I'm asking as the two CHAOSS logos are referenced at lines 464 and 1206 (chaoss.svg) but they have different background colors. I think this might make a difference as the landscape has a statement that says "Greyed logos are not open source".

Thanks for any insight! I'm happy to fix it, just not sure where.

Would it be helpful to collect resources that OSPOs can use to upskill new hires or expand their services?

I was also thinking about a reading list or book list (but that might just be my academic roots speaking):

  • Producing Open Source Software (Karl Fogel)
  • Forge your Future with Open Source (Vicky Brasseur)
  • The Art of Community (Jono Bacon)
  • Intellectual Property and Open Source (Van Lindberg)
  • ...

Review list submission when updating new logos to OSPO landscape

There are some requirements from the list submission at ospolandscape.yml that are blocking people to add their logos as an OSPO to the landscape, even though it's clear they have an OSPO team. For instance, having a project with more than 300 stars.

Checklist for inclusion of Service Providers in landscape

Conversation from the 2022-11-02:

  • #92 to OSPO Landscape
    • Inspiration: ISC Services Directory
    • Ensure not an endorsement, we won’t review
    • Action: Need a checklist for reviewing PRs for new service providers
    • Anyone can submit:
      • Do they have a dedicated webpage?
      • Do they have OSPO services?
      • OSPO vs. OSS services
    • Concerns with adding logos - need a contact to approve

This issue is for asynchronously discussing & creating the checklist mentioned above.
