instagram-download-browser-extension's Issues

Download button not shown on videos

Browser(Chrome/Firefox): Firefox 125.3.0 on Android
Extension Version: 2.1.2
Reproduction of links: Can't share because account private and NSFW, and they will only approve those with same interests.

Download button does not show on videos if the account is private. it works fine with pictures

Instagram has increased hostility - forced logouts whilst using this tool.

I have used this plugin for a while to download content from Instagram, For the past 2-3 days now my account has been constantly logged out and I got a message stating that Instagram believes I'm using automated tooling.

I disabled the plugin on my Firefox browser earlier and knock on wood I haven't had any logouts. They were immediately logouts as well, as soon as I clicked on a story or navigated to another page I wouldn't be logged in anymore.

I did notice that when I was getting logged out, I was getting "__coig_restricted" appended to my URL as well - Any theories as to what that could stand for?

I don't use any other tool to download Instagram content, so all theories point to Instagram's increased hostility towards download tools and somehow they're detecting the changes the plugin makes to the page. (I would be interested in knowing how they're detecting this, since as far as I know the plugin is just putting pieces together that have already loaded and sending them to the file system.)

I would be interested in hearing if anybody else has had a similar experience, It seems like Instagram's restrictions are only worsening over time, unfortunately.

This isn't meant to scare anybody either, I'm only looking to raise awareness and perhaps find a solution to avoid any permanent account suspensions.

Download failed

I'm getting download failed in some posts, no matter if they are public or private. Can you fix that?

I'm using Firefox 123.0 on Android 11

Not yet perfect

And - I suspect - not likely to ever be.... I don't know where you're at physically, but in the US, we sometimes talk of whack-a-mole. You can look it up, but it basically relates to situations (I'm sure this is ONE SUCH) where no sooner do you provide something USEFUL ... but which Instagram HATES ... than they do something to make it fail. I'm glad I installed it and it definitely works some of the time. You have a screenshot of an Asian girl, and her images download beautifully. Here's my "fail" - https://www.instagram.com/frankinjection/p/CwAb4TEoRE_/?img_index=1

I tried it on both Chrome & Firefox & no down arrow appears. Feel free to email me at peter [at] mossandfreud.com

Very minor thing. The extension name on Chrome & Firefox is different. Maybe, you cannot control that, but if you can, you should. You have the makings of a beautiful brand AND a great product! (I'm using it to collect some great photos of Prague, and it's working great on at least one of those.)

The extension slows down Threads considerably

Browser(Chrome/Firefox): Firefox on Ubuntu Linux
Extension Version: 2.1.7
Reproduction of links: Any threaded post on Threads.net

For the past couple of weeks I've noticed that Threads is unbearably slow. When I open a post to see the subsequent posts they can take up to 20 seconds to load. I disabled all the extension on my system and started testing each one. This one turned out to be the culprit.

Filename problems

  1. Saving an image from Stories currently results in filenames such as "387190780_18389728120018662_1583554250286888030_n.jpg stp=dst-jpg_e15&efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6ImltYWdlX3VybGdlbi4xNDQweDgxMC5zZHIifQ&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr8-2.cdninstagram.com&_nc_cat=106&_nc_ohc=lvubGOKVFqsAX8UNvjq&edm=ALQROFkAAAAA&ccb=7-5&ig_cache_ke.jpeg".

  2. When adding the account name to a filename, the wrong account name is used.

Permissions tweak for Android

Thanks for making this. It's very handy.

I'm using this on Android following these instructions.

I see that only two permissions are listed rather than three, and the option to toggle permissions for add-ons doesn't seem to exist in firefox beta for android:
Access your data for www.instagram.com
Store unlimited amount of client-side data

However, maybe there is a way around it.

media-helper also suffers, but partially works for some reason.
I can tap & hold, and that add-on enables the context menu on an image and I can save or open in a new tab on android. But its javascript-added button also doesn't function.

If I were to manually edit some files in the .xpi, what would I want to add to which file, so that I can manually/forcibly enable the missing permission for https://*instagram.com?

Better yet, maxurl doesn't seem restricted from creating its pop-ups, possibly because of the permission "allow access to all sites" and it's also not a toggle I can enable, but it's already enabled by default.
What would I change to force "allow access to all sites" for your add-on?

That may be the ticket to success on android--allowing access to all sites by default.

Instagram has changed the layout post when clicked

This extension is not working for a post when click from

  1. a user's profile page, or
  2. from a saved collection

Here's an example of a new IG layout where this extension will not work.
Screenshot 2024-03-06 213401

The extension is working fine for

  1. stories
  2. post on a news feed

Wish: customize download filename template

I always save images in a folder named after the account name, so Iโ€™d like to remove that first item from the template. Great to find a working download extension again!

In Windows, links in stories are not clickable.

If there's a link in a story, clicking on it doesn't do anything. Similarly, if the story is a repost from another account then clicking on it should normally take you to the original account, but nothing happens.

File name error on tagged images

Unable to reproduce consistently, but tagged images will save images with the tagged account name instead of the posting account.

Stories in DMs

I noticed that when you open a story shared with you via Direct Messages, downloader either doesn't download anything, or it downloads one of three things - 1) your own story, 2) text file with your username (I forgot to copy what was in it), 3) the last story you saw (or last one you downloaded? not sure). It works correctly after refreshing the page.

HIghlights bug

I can download stories and posts but when i try to download highlights or open them in a new tab it does nothing. I'm using last version (1.4.4) and i'm on firefox 117

Extension seems to be blocked

The extension no longer works on my account for both pics and videos, and this message keeps appearing at random intervals (although it never says which feature it's talking about):

Screenshot 2024-02-09 171111a

Very long filenames

The extension is currently generating filenames such as:
"358566487_636829371499134_623616662404784974_n.jpg stp=dst-jpg_e35_p1080x1080&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr8-1.cdninstagram.com&_nc_cat=106&_nc_ohc=GCZr33oTVZkAX8m-8HI&edm=ANmP7GQBAAAA&ccb=7-5&ig_cache_key=MzE0Mjg5Mj"

This is probably caused by a code change by Instagram.

Instagram blocking extension?

Hi there, not sure if anyone has the same issue but today Instagram seems to be blocking access to individual profile pages with the extension on. Turning it off allows access to the profiles. The extension still works in the main feed at least, but that's the only page that can be navigated.

This is what I see on any profile page:
cDkMovd 1

Not sure if it needs to be updated?

Blobs don't download?

I suddenly seem to be unable to get this to download anything other than a jpeg. I think it might be the blobs instagram started using? Not sure
