cv's Introduction

Toby Brock - Software Engineer

Phone - 07908 411 200 | Email - [email protected] | LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/toby-brock/

I am primarily a front-end engineer with experience in every part of the development pipeline, from back-end APIs to scalable middleware layers, cloud delivery solutions and CI/CD workflows. I am a strong believer in Agile delivery and think that the most important thing for good quality code is that it is easily understood by others.

I am looking for a fully remote position or a remote-friendly position based in Manchester.

Experience

Babylon | January 2021 - Present | Software Engineer

Currently, I am on an international team working to deliver and maintain web-based applications that enable a global team of support agents and clinicians to provide remote healthcare and lifestyle support. I use TypeScript and the React framework to create and maintain accessible and responsive UI/UX components, as well as sourcing the needed data from our microservices in a scalable way via a federated GraphQL middleware. I also maintain and update a small amount of existing JavaScript and Ruby pages. This work allows our support staff and clinicians to provide a higher quality of healthcare, and lets them do it easily and quickly.

As an experienced member of the team, I have a lot of ownership and input to our documentation, such as release process outline, style guides and contribution standards. This documentation allows new members of the team to onboard quickly and easily and begin contributing productive work sooner. This domain knowledge also often leaves me with the most context for niche areas of the product and involves me in a lot of strategic planning and architectural discussions.

I am also lucky enough to have a lot of opportunities to mentor some of the junior and newly-onboarding members of the team, as well as do quite a lot of interviewing for different roles across the business.

Babylon | November 2019 - January 2021 | Junior Software Engineer

I was hired into this role from Makers Academy Bootcamp, with a mind to join a Ruby-based back-end team, but ended up in a team that was just starting to migrate from supporting ruby pages into developing new React pages. This caught my interest and led to me working mostly on the front-end.

As a junior, a lot of my time was spent pairing with the more experienced members of the team or doing work very similar to already completed work. This was a great way to learn both broad and specific knowledge, and I was promoted from this role fairly quickly.
