japanese's Introduction

Japanese Learning Journey

This document contains everything I've figured out about learning Japanese.

Motivation

I find Japanese media interesting, and its close connection to internet and technology intrigues me. Similar to how I learned English without a specific goal, I'm diving into Japanese out of curiosity. While I enjoy some anime, I wouldn't call myself a hardcore "weeb." Learning Japanese offers personal enrichment and potential professional advantages.

Approach

Roadmap

  1. Master Hiragana and Katakana: These are the fundamental building blocks of Japanese.
  2. Learn Vocabulary and Grammar: Dive into vocabulary (including Kanji) and grammar rules.
  3. Practice Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing: Engage with all aspects of the language.
  4. Utilize Online Tools: Make the most of various internet resources.
  5. Progressively Advance: Challenge yourself with more complex topics.

Input and Output

In language learning, there are two key components:

  1. Input: Comprehension through reading and listening.
  2. Output: Expression through writing and speaking.

My focus will be on mastering input before output.

Mastering Hiragana and Katakana

Utilize any resource available to learn these alphabets thoroughly.

Vocabulary, Grammar, and Practice

Methodology

I'll be using the "blindfold method," emphasizing repetitive practice and error review. While spaced repetition software (SRS) will play a role, I'll prioritize real-world input, emphasizing contextual learning.

Tools I'll be using include:

Setup Video

Learning Process

I'll start by selecting beginner-friendly videos from Comprehensible Japanese. My study routine will include various methods:

  1. Audio-only.
  2. Subtitles-only.
  3. Audio with subtitles.
  4. Video with audio-only.
  5. Video with audio and subtitles.
  6. Video with audio and highlighted subtitles.
  7. Vocabulary mining and sentence analysis.
  8. Reverse review from step 6 to 1.

Each video will have its own flashcard deck, and I'll add them to a playlist for casual listening. After completing this I will continue to review for two weeks (with and without subtitles), I'll move on to the next video. Throughout this process, I'll continue reviewing with jpdb.io and studying grammar.
With time I should gain a lot of vocabulary and also grammar and develop not just my listening skills but also reading skills too. Once this happens I will move on to more advanced things such as movies, drama, music, anime, manga, technical documents etc...
For the time being I will practice listening to some intonation too.
