find-n-run's Issues

No icons when Icon cache is in /tmp

The icon column is empty if the ICONCACHE path points inside /tmp.
Reproduced on Fatdog64-701.
Priority: low.
Work-around: Don't set ICONCACHE to a tmpfs file system directory.

I believe this is a gtkdialog issue. The tree list widget doesn't display the icon-column icons when they link to files in a tmpfs file system (Fatdog64 mounts /tmp as such).

Version 1.10.6 is snappier than 2.1.1

Version 1.10.6 is snappier than 2.1.1

System Info

  • Findnrun 2.1.1
  • Fatdog64-710

Description

Reported by FSR by email.

Version 1.10.6 is noticeably snappier than 2.1.1 when typing the search term. What has happened since then that slows down the newer version?

  • set varICONS=true

Inconsistent focus after double-clicking list item

When a list item is executed by pressing Enter,Enter keyboard focus goes back to the search input field. But when the list item is executed by double-clicking it keyboard focus stays on the list item. Can the two cases be made consistent?

Button "remove entry from history" not working

Button "remove entry from history" not working

System Info

  • Findnrun 2.1.1
  • Fatdog64-710

Description

Reported by SFR by email:

"Remove entry from history" removes currently selected entry, but also adds the one that is highlighted in . Just click the '-' button few times to see what I mean. Also, I'm unable to add more than one item to the history (other than by pressing '-' button).

Search-as-you-type isn't initialized correctly

Search-as-you-type isn't initialized correctly and doesn't work when gtk-entry-select-on-focus=0 in GTK settings.

With such setting in ~/.gtkrc.mine, the prompt “Type some letters to refine the list” isn't automatically selected when findnrun starts. Therefore, when the user starts typing the prompt text isn't replaced by the search term, and search doesn't work.

# Prevent text entry widget select-on-focus, which overwrites X selection clipboard.
gtk-entry-select-on-focus = 0

Activating last tree item causes unwanted automatic scroll back

Reported by SFR, version 1.10.4

Start find-n-run and scroll down to the end of the list. Activate the last item, by double clicking it or pressing enter:

  • The associated program starts.
  • The list automatically scrolls back to about 1/3 of its length. This scroll-back is unwanted.

Scroll down again and re-activate the same item:

  • The associated program starts.
  • The list doesn't scroll back automatically. This is the desired behavior.

The unwanted behavior occurs only the first time some (not all) items positioned in the last 1/3 of the list get activated. This behavior never repeats once it has happened. The linked 'mpeg' screen cast shows the issue (download the linked png file, change its extension to mpeg to view it).
fnr mpeg

Search field pollutes primary clipboard

When findrun starts it sets the primary clipboard to text "Type some letters to narrow the list". Each time the contents of the search input field are auto-focused - like after starting any item - they are copied into the primary clipboard. findnrun should not pollute the primary clipboard.

Find-n-run 1.10.7 beta 2 downloads and comments

last document update: 2015-12-08
latest delta archive: 2015-12-08

Announcing

FEATURED With plugins comes the ability to connect new types of searches into the main window. Findnrun expands beyond its default "find and start an application" intent to "find something and do something with it". Some plugins are bundled with this release so you can immediately use them. Shell scripting ability suffices to write your own plugin.

Engage in the find-n-run 1.10.7 beta2 test. I especially hope for some people to write new plugins, so the new framework can get tested. You can read about plugins here.

There are many more new features in this release - see the changelog for details.

Installing

  1. Pre-requisite: install findnrun 1.10.6
  2. Download the findnrun-1.10.7_beta2-20151208.tgz delta archive.
  3. Uncompress the delta archive into the system top folder /. This will overwrite the existing 1.10.6 installation. Making backup copies before overwriting is your option. I don't, since I think this beta is stable enough to replace 1.10.6, and re-installing 1.10.6 is easy anyway.

Reporting Issues - Feedback - Contributing Plugins

I prefer for people to report bugs as new issues on github. Comments and plugins can be added to the github announcement thread. If that is too inconvenient you can post your reply into the Puppy forum Find'N'Run thread.

Preference setting to initialize the search input field

I might introduce an advanced preference setting to specify the search input field default text.
This setting would mainly be useful to pre-fetch a partial result for a given search key upon application start.
Another use could be as a work-around for issue #5. Initializing this setting to "" would effectively prevent the focused field value (null string) from changing the primary clipboard content.

Request: checkbox for SHOWNODISPLAY

Could you please add a checkbox for SHOWNODISPLAY?
When I boot Fatdog without savefile and want to quickly access some of concealed utilities buried in the depths of Control Panel (Eventmanager, Adjust Touchpad, etc.), the default SHOWNODISPLAY=false prevents this.
A checkbox would be a lot quicker and more convenient than manual editing of the config file.

command history

Even nicer if command history would contain unique items only.
