Ron L Hubbert - Battlefield Earth. o_O
You might include some Charles Stross in Hard SF. I am not so good in english so maybe someone else should write make that entry. Accelerando is a must there. Also Glasshouse!
The movie list is also a bit short.
What the hell happened at the short story section? So many great short story collections out there, so many short stories that worm into your mind or soul and won't come out, and the only entry is Hamilton's? The book was okay if you like Hamilton, but they are not good short stories.
Kind of minimal on the short fiction, there.
Okay, first things first, Mr. Robot is a TV show that started broadcasting this summer and blew everyone's mind. Its first season finale is tomorrow and it got really popular on the internet. The show is as awesome as it can get (its current IMDB rating is 9.1).
But is it really science fiction or not? I'm not sure.
On one hand, the show was written with a goal of being as realistic as possible. On the other hand, it has one imaginary company that rules like every industry from technology to food, an illuminati-like scenario where the main character is trying to fight against the richest ("top 1% out of the top 1%" as he calls them) using his hacking skills which he's using sort of like it's his superpower (and unlike every other hacking-related show and movie I've seen, this time, hacking seems as plausible as it can get in a TV show).
I think that anyone who's watching it will say that it has some elements of mild science fiction and therefore deserves a spot on this list. I also think that nobody is going to object if we call it awesome. I just don't know if it has enough Sci-Fi elements to be a part of this list so I'm submitting this as an issue.
I highly recommend it. It got me hooked even more than Game of Thrones did when I first discovered it. It's a bit too early too call it my favourite TV show, but it already deserved a place in my top three list for sure.
Highly entertaining. Action, sci-fi and comedy. What more could you ask for?
As discussed in #46 I am of the opinion that for any item, the synopsis should come before the commentary. This fits the usual pattern of "what it is" followed by "why I should read/view it", just like any online item page (e.g. on Amazon you see title, brief synopsis, and then user reviews)..
Thoughts welcome.
@mihailim have you read this? Can you add it?
As I have a sweet spot for Short Movies, I was wondering if it would be useful to add such a section to this awesome list?
Besides classics (for instance A trip to the moon (1902) [8.2] ๐) there are also various good contemporary shorts.
Good places of reference are:
Is this something this awesome list would be interested in?
Thrilling and original. Feels like a cross between Halo (the game), Groundhog Day and The Butterfly Effect.
District 9 (2009) Neill Blomkamp, Terri Tatchell [8.0]
An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology.
Vanilla Sky is actually based on Open Your Eyes (Abre Los Ojos http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0125659/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1), that is by many (me included) considered to be a better movie even if it's a low cost production. Following what was done with Solaris, this could be added to the list too.
Just for reference, the story is essentially the same and the main difference is a objectively better acting.
On GitHub, you can just use ๐ฅ and โญ instead of the images and it renders. I think this makes a lot more sense than the image thing we have at the moment, which is too big for the line and requires strange copy pasting.
Shall I switch them?
It was just so bad. Good CG, but absolutely no story or character.

IMHO [4.32]
is way too specific and not very useful. I think we should round it [4.3]
. Thoughts?
Would anyone be interested in a virtual reading group, based on this list? We could decide to read one book every month or two, and then post our thoughts here.

I think we should rename the "Short Stories" section to "Short Story Collections"--all existing entries there are collections as opposed to individual short stories, and so far all suggestions and discussions I've seen here talk about SSCs as well.
No one uses it. I think issues was a much better entry point, given this few-month test.

The award-winning Chinese Sci-fi
Children of Dune was pretty amazing, as was the Dune miniseries made for the sci-fi channel.
We have a host of issues looking for people to comment on books. Maybe it would be good to have a section saying: "We've heard these books are awesome, but no one has thought they were awesome enough to commit. Would you like to?" This might up engagement.
Staying with issues also a good option.
It had a great promise, but the movie itself was IMHO terrible. Only good part was Morgan Freeman explaining stuff. Thoughts?

I'm not alone in this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/scifi/comments/380izr/scifi_worth_consuming/crroh51
After all, sci-fi stands for "scientific fiction"
Each entry should have a short commentary on why it's worth reading (consuming). Should be added by someone that has already consumed it.
If you've read/consumed any of the items. Please consider helping out and add some commentary.
Example:
A heavyweight read, so not the best starter novel, but good if you're into futuristic philosophy.
Since we have already done so in the movies section, we might as well do it here too.
This was suggested in #88. Anyone read it?
Where should they be?

Suggested by a coworker. Author also wrote Half-Life and Portal.
The list should be alphabetized, most likely. Does someone want to take this on?
Since we already have a lot of movies added to this list, maybe we should start organizing them in different categories like we already categorized books?
The name of the author is displayed with the italic font.
Link the name of the author to their Goodreads page so the readers could see all of the books published by the author and drop the italic-ing of the font.
Instead of this:
A Fire Upon the Deep (1992) by Vernor Vinge [4.1]
Maybe we could make the entries look like this?
A Fire Upon the Deep (1992) by Vernor Vinge [4.1]
I'm also thinking about linking to the website of the author if he has one. Your opinions?
Seems like some dates are wrong:
https://www.reddit.com/r/scifi/comments/380izr/scifi_worth_consuming/crrexke
We need to add some. Which ones? All of them?
In some (if not all) categories, the year of publication could have a huge impact on the visitor in his decision to read / watch the entry or not.
I think that this list needs to have a year of the (first) publication next to the name of the entry. I'll be more than happy to contribute to the list by adding this info next to the every entry in the list.
My suggestion on the format:
#### [TITLE](LINK) (YEAR) *by AUTHOR* [RATING]
Anyone read it?

'Soft Sci Fi' list which includes Schild's Ladder.... that's some pretty hard scifi right there.

Also Flower's for Algrenon would probably not be classified as Bio Punk but as Soft Sci Fi

I have a feeling they got soft and hard missed up, considering the martian is not in hard.

And Greg Egan's awesome Orthogonal series isn't listed, which is basically a lesson in why you should pay attention in physics and maths classes.
The Clockwork Trilogy by Greg Egan was suggested. Anyone read it?
Thoughts on a section of links to other lists?
This just popped up on Hacker News:
I've actually read only "Shard of Honour" and "The Vor Game" so i can't comment on the series as a whole but it's a classic, well written and with interesting characters.

Wool (July 2011) Hugh Howey [4.3]
This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside.
