ftfy-web's Introduction

ftfy-web

A simple web wrapper around Robyn Speer's FTFY Python library. Paste in some broken unicode text and it will tell you how to fix it!

Try it out at https://ftfy.now.sh/

The tool outputs Python code to fix the input text, for example:

s = "He's Justinâ\x9d¤"
s = s.encode('latin-1')
s = s.decode('utf-8')
print(s)

In some cases it will output additional imports from the ftfy package, for example:

import ftfy.bad_codecs # enables sloppy- codecs
from ftfy.fixes import restore_byte_a0
s = 'It was named „scars´ stones“ after the rock-climbers who got hurt while climbing on it.'
s = s.encode('sloppy-windows-1250')
s = restore_byte_a0(s)
s = s.decode('utf-8')
print(s)

ftfy-web's Issues

Simplified Chinese

Should it be able to fix “ÓůÓĂČíĽţ(YYRJ)” ?
(It should be a person’s name in a Chinese script.)

Bug: pasting `v¾¾r` or using https://ftfy.vercel.app/?s=v%C2%BE%C2%BEr inserts `Â` before each `¾` and comes up with the wrong solution.

Pasting v¾¾r or using https://ftfy.vercel.app/?s=v%C2%BE%C2%BEr inserts  before each ¾ and wrongly results in this:

s = 'v¾¾r'
s = s.encode('latin-1')
s = s.decode('utf-8')
print(s)

then prints v¾¾r (which it started with)

The actual solution should be this:

s = 'v¾¾r'
s = s.encode('cp850')
s = s.decode('latin-1')
print(s)

printing vóór.

Thai

Should it be able to fix “ąéͧľĂ WiFi ¤čĐ” ?
(It should be a person’s username in the Thai script.)

https://ftfy.vercel.app/?s=Pyrenee%C3%83%C2%ABn is broken and explains the wrong source text

I tried running https://ftfy.vercel.app/?s=Pyrenee%C3%83%C2%ABn to see what would cause Pyreneeën

In stead of explaining Pyreneeën, it explained Pyrenee«n

A log of the difference between these two is at https://gist.github.com/jpluimers/adff0ffe6eec6fdc7eab642ffdfd4ee5

I tried archiving the current faulty behaviour at https://web.archive.org/web/20211107130727/https://ftfy.vercel.app/?s=Pyrenee%C3%83%C2%ABn (which failed with a server error 500) and https://archive.md/to6Vt (which succeeded)
