LibreOffice Linguistic Tools

This add-on inserts lexical and interlinear data from SIL FieldWorks into LibreOffice. Other features include Data Conversion using SIL Converters.

OOLT menu

To download the add-on, go to https://extensions.libreoffice.org/extensions/lingtools. Source code is on github.

Help (including installation instructions) is available from the menu, or you can download it here: Linguistic Tools Help.pdf. For complete version history, see README.txt

Notes for Developers

The .oxt file is a zipped file with source code included. Most of the code is in the pythonpath folder as described here.

Information about how to build the add-on is in README_build.txt

libreoffice-linguistic-tools's Issues

Data Conversion test crashes on Linux

On Ubuntu VM even test 1 crashes.
The debug.txt log seems to indicate that AddConverter() crashes.
That would make sense, since it has not been tested as much as normal Data
Conversion methods such as InitConverter().
Maybe AddConverter() just has a bug in the linux ECDriver code,
such as something simple like a string error when printing a message.

can't find `libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1`

Hi,

when I press select Converter I get an error:

Library error: libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

Looks like it didn't find a path to my libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1, but I have it on my PC:

$ locate libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1
/opt/mono-sil/lib/libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1
/opt/mono-sil/lib/libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/debug/opt/mono-sil/lib/libmonoboehm-2.0.so.1.0.0

What should I do?

  • Linux 5.3
  • LibreOffice Version: 6.3.1.2
  • Linguistics Tools 3.9.2
  • SIL FLEx 8.3
  • Python library lxml is installed

Word list number of occurrences

Words will be counted twice if they match more than one
search criteria, for example Arial Bold font and Strong Emphasis style.

Dialogs too big for the screen

I'm having a problem with the tools dialogs being too big for the screen, I can't see the buttons at the bottom of the dialog. The only way that I can use the tools is by guessing how many tabs will get me to the OK or Cancel buttons. I'm using Fedora Linux with a 15.6", 16:9, 1366X768, and LibreOffice, if that's important.

I'm also having a problem with LibreOffice crashing when I do spellcheck, but maybe that's another issue. Thanks for listening.

Extra text portions for ref numbers

Editing a ref number manually adds a new text section,
and then updating examples will only get part of the ref number.

Add a cleanup dialog? Like SOLID.

  • first have an option that just looks for problems
  • to fix, could simply replace the word string, which seems fairly easy.
  • searching will be the difficult thing.
    • Replace the whole contiguous string, not just one word at a time.
Or maybe a paragraph at a time. See how it is typically done in the XML.
    • Make a textcursor for the main text.
    • Loop through each frame and make a textcursor for each one.
    • Loop through each table and make a textcursor for each cell.

Rename line checkboxes in Grammar Settings

Morpheme Line 1
Morpheme Line 2

Line 1 will be checked by default.
This will break compatibility with settings,
requiring the user to change checkboxes.
The most common use is to just use one line,
so we want that transition to be smooth.
So have new user var names,
and ignore the old ones.
So it will default to Line 1 checked.

Make sure it doesn't matter to LingTools if for example the Tamil script is
in Line 2.

Toolbox orthographic tags will be line 1?
But then the default of using line 1 will use only orthographic
representation, which doesn't seem right.
Would it work to say if line 1 and 2 are both checked,
then we want orthographic text also,
otherwise just normal text?
No, because then it wouldn't be possible to show only orthographic text.
Let's make line 2 be orthographic,
even though that won't be how it ends up being shown (unless a hidden option
is set?).

Change the grammar documentation to describe FieldWorks first.

Zero responce from any buttons from Linguistics menu

For some reason whatever I click from Linguistics menu (except Help) doesn't have any effects. Zero response. I mostly interested in Data Conversion. Should I try with the older versions of Linguistic Tools?

  • Linux 5.3

  • LibreOffice Version: 6.3.1.2

  • Linguistics Tools 3.9.1

  • SIL FLEx 8.3

  • Python library lxml is installed

Writing glosses?

Hi,

I am thinking about moving my wife (PhD in linguistics, oriented more towards syntax/semantics than morphology/phon{etics,onology}) from LyX/LaTeX towards LibreOffice and the obvious problem is missing support for glosses and syntax trees. Is your package something which could work as an replacement for glosses as produced by covington package (pages 7 and following)?

gloss

If yes, could you please add some example how to do it to the manual? Thank you.

(and yes, this could be possibly a duplicate of #8, but I am not sure I understood that issue well enough).

label contradiction

Thanks for the tool! I'm interested to see how it works. I'm just taking it for a spin, but have already found an issue: Linguistics > Get Interlinear Examples returns the error, "Please go to Grammar Settings and specify a file" if one has not done so yet. There is no "Grammar Settings" menu item, however, Linguistics > Interlinear Settings opens a window called "Grammar Settings". Suggest changing the error message and window title to "Interlinear Settings".

Script Practice crash when changing scripts

Can't change to Devanagari without crashing. "20-Nov-15 LO 5.0.3"
Can't change to Khmer without crashing. "20-Nov-2015 LO 5.0.3, AOO 4.1.1"
Can't change to Bengali without crashing. "20-Nov-2015 AOO 4.1.1"
Can't change to Tamil or Devanagari without crashing.

Can change to Arabic, Bengali, Greek, Hebrew, Thai.
Seems to affect most South Asian scripts but not any others.

Also it occurred on Ubuntu and Windows LO (20-Nov-2015) but not after
LO had been open awhile,
and the Run Macro command opened its menu faster.

It occurs in the released version of OOLT.
Maybe it is a problem with my Win10 setup.

Select from Ref Number List

For Grab Examples, read the data in DlgControls.loadValues() when opening the dialog. Change the input text box to be a combo box.

Also, add a check box "Select Multiple" that shows a list box instead of a combo box. Or show the list box in a sub-dialog. Highlight multiple ref numbers by holding Shift and clicking, or Ctrl.

User Var settings for Calc

Keeping Calc settings in Writer is annoying because I
save the Calc file but then the settings do not get saved. It is often
confusing in various situations.

Gloss writing system

Writing system is only for phonetic / phonemic, not gloss.
For example Moreira:22 gloss has both "en" and "pt" writing systems.
Note that gloss does not use the "form" tag.

Cannot detect media-type

During the installation or removal I get this message:

Version: 6.3.1.2
Build ID: b79626edf0065ac373bd1df5c28bd630b4424273
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.4; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

Normalizing

Collate number of occurrences according to a normalization form, perhaps NFD.
Also spell check this way.
Is there a library or something we can use to convert to NFD?
EncConverters will do it but that is awkward.
Unless we just require the user to convert everything to NFD.

Hide Tooltip

The dialog shows &328.DlgGrammarSettings.HelpText on mouseover.
At least we should add an empty string or a space or something to make this
less ugly.
