font-doulos's Issues

soft dotted character U+1DF1A and one mark above U+1ACE misbehaving

Accent placed on top of soft dotted characters, like i and j, cause the dot to disappear.

  1. U+1DF1A LATIN SMALL LETTER I WITH STROKE AND RETROFLEX HOOK is a soft dotted character and its dot should disappear: 𝼚̀ 𝼚́ 𝼚̂ 𝼚̃ 𝼚̄ 𝼚̅ 𝼚̆ 𝼚̇ 𝼚̈ 𝼚̉ 𝼚̊ 𝼚̋ 𝼚̌ 𝼚̍ 𝼚̎ 𝼚̏ 𝼚̐ 𝼚̑ 𝼚̒ 𝼚̓ 𝼚̔ 𝼚̽ 𝼚̾ 𝼚̿ 𝼚͆ 𝼚͊ 𝼚͋ 𝼚͌ 𝼚͐ 𝼚͑ 𝼚͒ 𝼚͗ 𝼚͛ 𝼚ͣ 𝼚ͤ 𝼚ͥ 𝼚ͦ 𝼚ͧ 𝼚ͨ 𝼚ͩ 𝼚ͪ 𝼚ͫ 𝼚ͬ 𝼚ͭ 𝼚ͮ 𝼚ͯ 𝼚᪰ 𝼚᪱ 𝼚᪲ 𝼚᪳ 𝼚᪴ 𝼚᫆ 𝼚᫇ 𝼚᫈ 𝼚᫉ 𝼚᫋ 𝼚ᫌ 𝼚ᫍ 𝼚ᫎ 𝼚᷄ 𝼚᷅ 𝼚᷆ 𝼚᷇ 𝼚᷈ 𝼚᷉ 𝼚᷋ 𝼚᷌ 𝼚ᷚ 𝼚ᷜ 𝼚᷵ 𝼚᷾ 𝼚𞂏

  2. U+1ACE COMBINING LATIN SMALL LETTER INSULAR T should cause the dot of soft dotted character to disappear: iᫎ jᫎ įᫎ ɉᫎ ɨᫎ ʝᫎ ʲᫎ іᫎ јᫎ ᵢᫎ ᶖᫎ ᶤᫎ ᶨᫎ ḭᫎ ịᫎ ⁱᫎ ⱼᫎ

IPA and Phonetic characters missing

The following symbols are used by phoneticians working with the IPA:

⸨double parentheses⸩

double slash⫽

⟪double angle brackets⟫

The five Unicode code points are:

  • U+2E28 Left double parenthesis
  • U+2E29 Right double parenthesis
  • U+2AFD Double solidus operator
  • U+27EA Mathematical left double angle bracket (z notation left chevron bracket)
  • U+27EB Mathematical right double angle bracket (z notation right chevron bracket)

These are not in the current Doulos font as of March 2023.

Diacritics that should be below characters are not below the base character's descender

For IPA diacritics that go below the baseline like the non-syllabic marker (U+032F Combining inverted breve below) as in u̯), the diacritic does not work correctly with base characters that have descenders, characters like y. Writing y̯ will draw the breve below the baseline but not below the entirety of the base character (y) glyph. The diacritic is slightly to the right of the descender, but this is not enough to avoid bleeding over. When printing in smaller fonts (or even in 12 pt when viewed from a normal reading distance on a screen), the diacritic will touch the descender of the base character glyph. This also applies to the combining marker (U+035C Combining double breve below) as in p͜f.

For U+032F, the horizontal offset is okay, but it should not be extended further and Doulos should accept going below the descender. The inter-line spacing is generally sufficient and other IPA symbols like U+035C (Combining double breve below) already go below the lowest point of the descenders in the Doulos font.

The diacritics below need to all move slightly further down or else they need to intelligently move down in the presence of glyphs with descenders.

If my desired changes would mess up the inter-line spacing or cause conflicts with multiple stacked diacritics in Vietnamese running text, then please say so. That is a bigger priority for U+032F. Forr U+032F, however, this diacritic is only ever used in phonetic transcriptions, not in running texts of Vietnamese and, therefore, U+032F probably should be clear to move a few tiny bits lower than its current placement.

Turned h (U+A78D, U+02AF) has a round capital but its smallcap is square

/LtnCapTurnedH/LtnSmTurnedH (Ɥ U+A78D LATIN CAPITAL LETTER TURNED H, ɥ U+0265 LATIN SMALL LETTER TURNED H) have a round capital shape for the uppercase /LtnCapTurnedH (Ɥ U+A78D) looking like /LtnSmTurnedH.sc /CyCapChe (Ч U+0427 CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER CHE).
Their smallcap /LtnSmTurnedH.sc is square.

/LtnSmTurnedH.sc should probably not be square, as /LtnCapTurnedH is not square, and should be more similar to or the same as /CySmChe.sc.

Current /LtnCapTurnedH/LtnSmTurnedH /LtnSmTurnedH.sc:
