This would probably be a good use case for GitHub actions. It would be nice to be able to push a button and have the following happen:

• Run bin/build and build/archive to produce the .xcframeworks.
• Determine the next version number:
  • New libgit2 version? Match it.
  • New patch? Automate generating a semver patch version relative to the current libgit2 release.
• Update Package.swift with the new checksums and download URLs.
• Push a new commit, annotated tag.
• Publish a matching GitHub release and upload the .xcframework.zip archives.

This would help resolve the chicken-and-egg problem of creating the release before the builds are produced, and then later uploading the archived assets. The manual process is error-prone.

Binary targets are documented as being unsupported outside Apple platforms. It would be nice if we could find a way to support Linux and Windows too, though.

One possible option, if we can figure out how to express it in Package.swift, would be to switch to using a systemLibrary target on non-Apple platforms, and avoid binaries there altogether.
