Aha! Figured out my issue. I was compiling openvpn with these options:
--enable-pkcs11
--enable-plugins
--enable-systemd
--enable-x509-alt-username
Removing this in the ./configure step fixed the issue
from aws-vpn-client.

Awesome, glad I looked through the closed tickets because this now works for me even with the latest openvpn 2.6.3 and a small patch tweak. I just had to remove --enable-pkcs11 in my newer openvpn-aws.rb based on the 2.6.3 recipe Homebrew on MacOS. I wonder what monkeying I'll have to do to get tunnelblick to just work.
