I have previously subscribed to notifications to this repository, so I can keep up to date with any changes to the template.

Unfortunately, it seems changes are being made by pushing directly to main, which doesn't trigger the notifications that one would get had a PR been opened.

This meant I didn't see this change for example:
7ee1909

Using a PR is also considered best practice from a code review and community transparency point of view (and this seems like a good repository in which to lead by example 🙂).

Please can mandatory PRs be enabled using branch protection rules?

Do we also have to update to 2020 the short version of the BSD-3-Clause from 2018 to 2020?
