steamos-microsd's Issues

SteamOS option not showing up in Boot Manager

I've installed everything as per the guide, started setting up stuff in Destkop mode and at one point I needed to log off my user. At that point the screen turned black and nothing happened anymore (left it like this for 10 minutes).

I powered off the Steam Deck manually and after that point, the SteamOS option simply stopped showing up in the Boot Manager.

Is this a known issue? Is logging off not possible with this setup and does it break everything?

Steam OS wont boot (post first boot)

During first boot, after I input the wireless information and the time, the steam deck installed for a few minutes and then downloaded some updates. After that, it rebooted me into windows (from my SSD), I then shut down and booted off my microSD, and it just hangs at the steam deck logo.

cmd: command not found

This problem is caused by line 24 and 26 of "install_sdcard.sh".
I modified "cmd" to "sudo", and it is OK.

Should be a caution notice at the manual that SSD shouldn't have SteamOS traces not only at installation to microsd, but when its updating too

I had SteamOS installed on microsd from this guide for a long time.
I had Windows installed on SSD.
Then I decided to put back old SSD with SteamOS for a while.
Then I did boot from microsd.
SteamOS found updates, I confirmed them, and they got installed.
After reboot I couldn't boot SteamOS (it was total mess about missing almost everything at boot) - as I understand, it tried to boot from SSD.
I did force shutdown Deck and turn it ON via choosing boot device (microsd), but it still didn't boot with same errors.
So I replaced SSD again and reinstalled SteamOS to microsd. This time it updated to the latest successfully.

Just saying, that SSD shouldn't have any traces of SteamOS at all or else you will corrupt SteamOS installed on microsd when it updated.

Question about the big warning about steam os on the ssd

I read the landing page and warnings, but was curious as I have a specific use case for installing steam os to a micro sd, and it’s not to have windows on the internal ssd.

I would like to compile mesa for the deck, but I don’t want to touch my internal installation to make this possible.

In that case is it possible to install to the microsd with an existing internal installation of steam os? I know I can’t update the install on the sd card, but I don’t mind. Probably it even just needs to boot once….

Imaging get stuck

Every time I run the install script it gets stuck on steamos-chroot' '--disk' '/dev/mmcblk0' '--partset' 'A' •--' mkdir' '/eft/SteamoS•

PSA: Seriously pick a fast SD card...

Not an issue, but I sure though there were issues due to the terribly slow SD card I chose.
SERIOUSLY DO NOT USE A SLOW SD CARD...
The time it takes for that 1st boot can be well over a half hour on the older cards.... As well as the installation itself.
I am sitting at about 3 hours now, and finally at the desktop!

Password set by default during installation? Cannot change password.

I've followed all instructions and wanted to change my password. It seems this guide has a built in password because when attempting to change the password results in an "Authentication Required" prompt. The guide never ask you to "set a password" as I never did. It's safe to assume one was set by default during installation. What is that password so we can change it?

Thank you

Recovery OS always auto mount /dev/mmcblk0p8 and cause script error

Auto mount cause "Creating home partition..." error, mkfs.ext4 refused to execute when it is mounted.

So I try to manually create partition.
Then modify ~/tools/repair_device_sdcard.sh", turn "writePartitionTable" to "0" at line 340, re-run your script. Success.

May be you can add more check about partition mounted?
Thank you.
