Thanks for reporting the issue!

I think this is a shortcoming of the documentation, but this requires the webpack 5 builder to work. I wrongly assumed that if you were trying to get storybook to work with nextjs, you would stumble upon the official storybook guide to getting set up with nextjs, and see that they specify to use the webpack 5 builder: npx sb init --builder webpack5.

If there is enough support, I'd consider making this work with webpack 4, but for now I'd recommend moving to webpack 5 if able since that is what storybook specifies when working with their tool and nextjs.

Before I close this, do you have a specific need to be on webpack 4? Is there anyway I could have made this easier for you except put the webpack 5 requirement in the documentation?

Thanks for replying.
I think putting the webpack 5 requirement and the link official storybook guide to getting set up with nextjs in the documentation would be enough.
I'm going to close this issue.
Thanks again.
