awesome-rust-mentors's Issues

Expectations For Mentors

We need to properly fill out the expectations. I'm thinking the following points are important to include.

  • The main goal is to help them get involved in rust, not to directly teach them. Guiding them to resources and answering questions or helping them find the answer, not giving structured lessons.
  • Be polite and always constructive
  • Its okay if you don't have a ton of time, as long as you're responsive within ~ 1 day of a question (is this reasonable?)
  • If you're no longer active please ask to be removed.

There's probably a ton more things that should be said.

Add additional resources

I want to add more useful links for beginners who are maybe hesitant or shy to initiate contact with one of the mentors so they can still get their teeth into something.

https://github.com/not-yet-awesome-rust/not-yet-awesome-rust - seems like an okay list of project ideas.

I know @dtolnay has a few good repos as well

https://github.com/dtolnay/request-for-implementation
https://github.com/dtolnay/rust-quiz

Expectations for Mentees

  • Remember that these mentors are a 100% volunteer group, be kind and courteous.
  • Something about mentoring vs tutoring, maybe unnecessary as repetative from mentor section?
  • Please inform us if they're non responsive for a long period (7 days with no explanation?) or violate the CoC in any way. (need a point of contact for the repo that is not public, if someone experiences abuse we don't want them to have to open an issue to report it.)

Would it be possible to get exercism.io rust mentors via this place?

Hi,

I am currently doing the Rust track on exercism.io

I wait now since 3 days for the OK of a mentor to continue my track, this is not good.
Of course I can leaf the mentored way and unlock all exercises, what I will possible do, but in general, for people who would like to learn Rust this way faster mentor response would be great.

Since this place is about awesome rust mentors I thought it could not harm to add a note about the exercism.io problem here, and maybe this could be added as a possibility for awesome rust mentors to help people like me who use exercism to learn Rust.
Hope it's OK that I opened this issue with this topic

Success Stories!

If you find a mentor and you're happy with them, let us know! It would be helpful to the rest of us to see that this is actually helping new contributors get involved.
