I think the point of the guide's recommendation is that you can achieve the behaviour of or by using || and (), and they are recommending that over learning or. As you said, most people don't fully understand the precedence of or.

The point of the guide is not to explain the subtleties of the Ruby language. I get your point, but I don't think that the precedence rules warrant a place in the guide.
