Thanks for the elaborate report.

The culprit here seems to be the way setuptools links an extension. The flags passed to gcc when linking include "-lhiredis" which makes it search its library path for hiredis, while it should in fact statically link the vendored hiredis code. I want it to link statically to prevent exactly the problem you ran into. I bet that simply removing the distribution's hiredis package will fix the issue here.

The presence of a shared hiredis library should definitely not interfere here. I hope I'll be able to fix this without digging too deep into the guts of setuptools and family...

I dug into distutils a bit and it seems that fixing this properly is very involved due to the assumptions that the "build_ext" command in distutils makes. See the comment I added in ceaec64 for more information.
