Are you worried about performance? Depending on your rcContext implementation you can choose not to call any real timing functions. The timing functions are covering quite large patches of work, so the virtual function overhead is negligible.

No I'm not concerned about performance. I just thought it looked out of place. :)

I find it immensely useful. If you think of it more as a 'hook' into a potential source of information rather than an 'always-on' timer, it's much more deserving of its place in the API.
